Colonoscopy.....should you delay?
So, at age 56 I finally had a colonoscopy....I know, slightly delayed but it sounded like so much fun...right?
Well, I finally manned up and scheduled one....today was the procedure....prep sucked!! BUT.....it appears I have dodged a bullet....one of the polyps removed was quite large...the doc said he thinks it’s ok but he was willing to bet a paycheck that it would have been cancerous in two years time.....thank god I went finally! The moral of my story....if your like me and have put it off (recommended age is now 45).....man up...get it done!

Yeah, I’m up for my 2nd. I was thinking this Winter. The prep is the biggie, once out, non-event.

Yes, everyone over 50 should have a colonoscopy. They're really not anything bad to go through, and they could save you a lot of grief.
I've had two so far. The procedure is really not a big deal.

Yes, the prep is a nuisance, but think for a nanosecond or two about how inconvenient surgery to remove your colon, or that dying from cancer stuff would be. Colonoscopies are just one of the modern medical miracles we should be on our knees thanking someone for, not something to find excuses to avoid.

So many reasons to have the procedure.

I'm about 10 years away from having to get one. Hope they perfect other methods by then. It would be awesome if a dog could just smell my ass. Red Face

I was 65 before my first one. All they found was a hemorrhoid but I already knew that. Best part was I got a print out of about ten color pics of the cameras journey. One with a red circle with a arrow pointing to the hemorrhoid. I took a pic of it and sent it to my buddies and said “you are here”! Big Grin

Due to diverticulitis, i have had 5.
As others have said prep is the worst part.

Word of advice.
Schedule procedure for first thing in the morning.
You do the prep the night before and sleep thru the misery.
If you schedule for later in the day, you get to "continue"
prep the morning of the procedure. Prolonging the process.

Cologuard is pretty dang close right now. It detects abnormal DNA in stool, so is WAY better than relying on the old occult blood detection. You do it every 3 years, so essentially getting multiple samples in the same time as one colonoscopy. Yes if it's abnormal, you go for a colonoscopy, but you have nothing but sending in a poop sample invested at that point.

Bottom line is do something to get tested or scoped and don't just ignore it.

I have used Cologuard, so no probing, but do something to avoid dying from colon cancer, you mooks.

Oh yeah, the ride on the bed to the operating room was great, then the lights go out. And you wake up, slowly.
Got my first at 50, doc said I could wait until 60 for #2. No, don’t wait to get the first one.

I'm up for my third (or is it the fourth?) this fall. Last one found some benign polyps and bumped me to the "every 5 years" schedule.

I'm 48, and my insurance doesnt cover it until age 50. I figured I'd just pay out of pocket....its about $2,000.

Best friend's wife had them every 6 months or so, they always found polyps and it looked bad for her.

Then after 7 or 8 years of this, she died of a stroke.

Go figure.

You have to weigh the risks and benefits, me personally I avoid anesthesia whenever I can? Why you ask? Because every time you go under you risk not coming back. The anesthesiologist literally has your life in his hands. But, you say a colonoscopy is such a low risk? Well a Co workers dad died during his, never came out after being under.

I've had two and I'm only 52. I'll have another one in the next year or two but I avoid going u Der unless necessary.

If you've never had one or never had polyps I'd try the home test mentioned above. I'm not a doctor, I'm not even in the medical field but I'm passing on my experience and conversations with mu doctors and surgeon.

I'm 55 and need to get it done this year. Not looking forward to it, but it has to happen.

A colonoscopy saved my life 6 years ago, literally! It was my 2nd one.
It found a stage 3 rectal tumor that was on the verge of getting into some lymph nodes that would have made it stage 4 and spread it throughout my body.
As it was, it required 1 1/2 years of treatment including chemo, radiation and major surgery. I was 68 at time and have been cancer free since.

Needless to say I'm a huge fan of the procedure regardless of the prep discomfort.

Jim
