During Richard J’s reign, I lived on an apartment in the Old Town area.
The small studio apartment nearest the building entrance was occupied by a Chicago cop; the landlord gave him a good break on rent, as the cop provided enhanced security for the building.
This particular cop had absolutely no tolerance for the occasional would-be burglar who showed the poor judgement of trying to burglarize our building, and he seemed to enjoy his role as “enforcer.” More than once, I encountered the part-time janitor cleaning up blood in the entrance area, where the cop had had the pleasure beating the crap out of a ‘hood rat who had forced the inner lobby door.
