As state police warn of arrests, a defiant Rev. Pfleger moves ahead with planned Saturday march, shutdown of Dan Ryan

In a show of defiance Tuesday, activist and South Side Catholic priest the Rev. Michael Pfleger, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and others ripped up a statement from Illinois State Police warning of arrests if they moved forward with an anti-violence march that will shut down a portion of the Dan Ryan Expressway this weekend.

"When people keep ignoring you, you take it up a notch, and we are moving to one of the main arteries in the city to say we are not going to have business as usual," Pfleger said during a morning news conference. "We are going to continue to take it up a notch until we get responses."

In a statement issued Tuesday regarding the protest march, state police officials warned “pedestrians not to enter any expressways in Illinois, or they will face arrest and prosecution.”

The group, which could include hundreds of people, plans to march about 10 a.m. Saturday in the northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan from 79th Street to 67th Street. Pfleger said they were reaching out to lawyers across the city in anticipation of state police arresting the participants during Saturday's protest.

Rieonna Holmon, 15, said she and others want to meet with Gov. Bruce Rauner, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other elected officials — along with those running for office — to discuss solutions to gun violence.

"You can't keep saying it's just gang violence because at the end of the day it's still gun violence," she said. "At the end of the day, it's still innocent human beings dying because of a stray bullet."

The group gathered Tuesday morning at St. Sabina Catholic Church, where Pfleger is pastor, wants elected officials to work to provide better jobs and better schools on the city’s South and West sides, pockets of which are plagued by violence.

At an unrelated news conference Tuesday morning, Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz said his officers plan to physically prevent people from walking onto the Dan Ryan. The agency that has jurisdiction over the expressway.

“We're not looking to arrest people. I mean if people break the law, we may have to arrest people. But that's not what our goal is here," he said. "That's not our goal. Our goal is to save lives whether it be the young children or people in the city or motorists. We just don't want anybody to get hurt."

Chicago and state police have met with Pfleger and asked him to change his plans, but Schmitz isn’t so sure he can change the minister’s mind.

"I think dialogue is good. Father Pfleger has been doing this for a long time. But I would want him to know our reason for what's going on and maybe we can come to some sort of agreement," he said.

Schmitz wasn't able to say whether he would have enough troopers to staff the protest without relying on the Chicago Police Department, saying he would need to look at what resources are available at the time of the protest.

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, estimates the department will have to deploy about 200 officers to assist Illinois State Police during the protest.

Policing a protest on a highway is more complicated than closing off the Loop like police did for a recent rally aimed at the separation of immigrant families, Guglielmi said.

“Closing things around the Daley Plaza are more conducive than closing an entire expressway,” Gugliemi said.

In response to police saying the protest will pull resources from neighborhoods that need it, Pfleger suggested: "Then pull them from the North Side."

He estimates that 90 percent of his congregation knows someone who has been shot or may have been wounded in a shooting.

As of Monday, at least 1,378 people have been shot so far this year in Chicago, according to data compiled by the Tribune. And at least 61 of this year’s shooting victims have been children 15 and younger. Three police districts on the West Side — Harrison, Austin and Ogden — have had the highest number of shooting victims so far this year. On the South Side, the Gresham and Englewood districts have each had at least 95 people shot so far this year, according to the Tribune’s data.

Fake Father is a piece of shit and scumbag of the highest order. Take a look at the postings on Second City Cop Blog . There is lots going wrong with Chicago and Crooke County and ALL of it is the results of progressive bull shit artists AKA the Dimocrap party.

1. COPA, the Civilian Oversight board is made up entirely of activists who are investigating cops and making up new laws, policy and procedure all the time. Recent decision of theirs: being attacked by a suspect with a bat is not justification in their eyes to shoot the suspect. Ironically the officer involved was fired through their process and then the city had an expert witness testify in court during a lawsuit by the dead bat wielding suspects family that the officer was entirely justified in shooting bat wielding suspect.
2. The PA, Judges, and the Sheriff are doing their best to end mass incarceration....including low or no bond for convicted felons in possession of firearm (if the case is even issued), assault and robbery suspects. Several recent robbery, assault, and murder suspects were found to have had charges on them, were released, and then committed their new usually much more serious crime WITHIN several days of being released.
3. Lack of manpower, Rahm is playing the shuffling game more bodies around to appear to have massive police presence in certain areas at certain times.
4. The Fake Father was told that his protest would likely remove 100 officers from the areas hardiest hit by thug violence to cover his little temper tantrum, he didn't care.

This shit storm is all their own fault, it is NOT gun violence, it is human piece of shit THUG violence. All courtesy of the dimocrap party policies.

I have been watching what has and what is happening in Chicago, as St. Louis area is now experiencing some of the same stupid things via dimocraps.

I called him a Rabble Rouser last year, got agreement on that from our CPD members here, and he's still no better.

You want to fix this shit Rev. Michael Pfleger and Rev. Jesse Jackson?

Then quit preaching your hatred and ignorance towards the Governor, politicians and other citizens and start calling out the low life pieces of shit that are doing this to your city.

You have nobody to blame except yourselves and your followers.

Idiots. All of them.

Jsbcody, you may interested in knowing that in the recent civil trial in the shooting that you mentioned that the jury found for the defendant stating that he was justified in using deadly force. They then however awarded the plaintiffs 1 million dollars, for what reason I do not know. The Judge however ( this is the good part) vacated that award stating that they can't have it both ways which means the family got NOTHING,lol

There are ALOT of hardworking SouthSide Irish and Italians past 79th & the Dan Ryan. These folks are not to be trifled with.

I noticed they're not messing around the Bridgeport neighborhood either.

Ps. Fuck off Pfleger a make believe priest. You are a embarrassment to all Catholics.

This won't change a thing except adding to the arrest records of the protesters. There's no point in trying to talk to these people because there's no chance that they will see/admit the truth. There's no chance in them solving their problem with black-on-black violence because they fail to identify the causes.

Utterly pointless.

Now, go ahead and walk out onto the highway. The police will be right there to arrest you and your associates can record the whole thing. And while you've been doing your grandstanding, a couple more black kids have been murdered by other black kids, and then more, and more, and never ending.

It ain't a "peaceful" protest if you and your asshat idiots restrict the freedom of traveling for other citizens. Firehoses need to be used on these criminals for shutting down freeways, bridges, etc.

Couldn't happen to a nicer city.

I wish them much success in making Chicago even more of a disaster. Shut down the expressway for hours, even days.

This is much like Maxine Waters - give them all microphones and 24/7 youtube live streams - it is all more WINNING for us as it exposes the insanity of the leftists.

Think of the business opportunity - $20 for 5 minutes, $100 for the half hour?

This could give new meaning to the phrase "Dan Ryan flyer". It used to mean a junk car you didn't care much about doing 90+ on the Dan Ryan. I can imagine a few of those cars meeting up with a few protesters and people flying off the expressway.

Yeah, noticed that too! They have to be selective in which "hood" they want to protest.

Bulldog7972, I saw that and was quite amused. Glad the judge stepped up and did the right thing. I read the Second City Cop Blog everyday.......lets me know that others have it much worse than I right now and lets me know what might be coming down the road to us.

Yep, not really going to disagree with you there!
Thankfully Im on vacation and about 1200 miles west. Don't have to put up with any of it. Leo Schmitz is good people. Nuts, but a good kind of nuts. He's NOT going to put up with any bullshit from Phather Phaker or his asshole minions.

My prediction, they get arrested at the on ramps.
