Spent a lot of time working in Maine, was always beautiful even if COLD. As a guy born and raised in Florida I never found winters too bad. Reason being we spent a lot of our winters under dressed so Florida winters to me always seemed worse than ones up North because everyone dresses for snow. I might throw on a sweater and brave the wet 35 degree temps in Florida because well it only lasts 2-3 weeks usually. So while yes it is colder and a much different schedule throughout the year, if you're up for it, go for it. You only live once. My wife and I are planning a move to Montana when I retire in 14 years. Buying land after the virus and spending summers building slowly and getting used to a more simple way of life. Even growing up in Florida I never want to live there again. It's true many run from the snow in older age I will run towards it. All about perspective. I'm tired of the heat. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Unless you have reason to move to Maine, family farm, kids, have to for a job, I think you can do better. Maine doesn’t rate well in taxes or redness, should either be a factor. Go find a spot in SD you like.

I have, but they spent most of their life in Maine a stones throw from Canada, so as long as they stay south of that... _____________________________________________________ Sliced bread, the greatest thing since the 1911.

I always liked the idea of retiring to two locations, in other words selling your nice large home in a desirable ares for good money then buying a smallish home/cottage somewhere in the north maybe on a lake and another one in the south say NM, or AZ. Spend 5 months in the north and 7 in the south. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

That's what my grandfather did. Summers at Lake of the Woods, Ontario, winters in Naples, Florida.

Best of both worlds and a nice change of pace to look forward to every 6 months or so. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Visit the west end of N.C. when considering options. Asheville area. Beautiful country, 4 seasons be not near as harsh as Maine. Northern & western Pennsylvania? Also some beautiful country and very rural if you like rural. Some nice little towns too, all over the state.

I dont know anything about Maine, but I grew up in FL and my folks vacationed in NC (like 93% of Floridians...) and both my oldest sister and I went to college here in NC. She stayed, I left and it took me 31 yrs to get back and I love it here. Wife and I are buying some nice land in Alleghany county near Sparta on which we plan to build a cabin.

I have family in Maine and have spent a lot of time there. Most everybody have touched on the high/low points but I feel I have to say that while the winters are long and there is snow they are generally not BRUTAL like Minnesota or other areas that have -30,-40 degrees. Yeah there is snow and it is cold but it’s not too bad comparatively speaking. At least in the middle to south areas of the state. I don’t have enough far Northern Maine experience to comment. Hear that? That noise is the entirety of the Deep South laughing at your "humidity".

I've always thought the Black Hills area of SW South Dakota would be a nice place to live, at least scenery wise.

What I find funny is all the folks who complain about humidity in TN. It’s so cute they think they have humidity. I grew up on the Chesapeake bay basically. WE HAD HUMIDITY. In 20 years in TN I can count the number of days I thought were a weee bit humid on two hands. I had a buddy who was a big civil war history guy. He and his wife decided to tour Gettysburg......... in August. I told him he might want to rethink. He just blew me off and said I grew up in the south I can deal with heat blah blah. 2 days into his trip I get a message from him and I quote. “How the fuck do you people live in this shit”. It gets pretty humid in the mid Atlantic. As an aside it really puts a fine point on how miserable it must have been to trudge around, fight and just plain exist in those heavy ass hot cotton uniforms with no real respite in sight. I imagine there were huge losses from heat stroke back then. Take Care, Shoot Safe, Chris

I’d expect humidity in the South. If you have arthritis, cold and damp is not a good combination. Cathy

While TN is undoubtedly part of the South, I don't consider it part of the Deep South. The Deep South is those areas of the South nearer to or adjoining the coast, which are notably marked by oppressively hot and humid climates. Namely most or all of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, with portions of Southeast Texas, Northern Florida, and Southern Arkansas qualifying as well.

I love this. OK yes Maine does not have the true arctic lows that you get in MN. But that doesn't mean its not cold. I live on the coast so everything is moderated by the ocean temps which never really get cold. So its rare to have a below zero day, absent wind chill. But to put it in perspective here's my snow removal equipment list (I have a farm so there has to be movement available). Snow blowers, multiple John Deere tractor with plow Cat Loader with plow Cat Dozer when the two above can't do it (normally about 3-4 times per year) Cat excavator to remove ice when ice melt can't get the job done Sander on back of Deere gator so you can walk. There is not a reason the planet to retire here if there is no mandatory 'draw' like a dying parent of something like that... Edited to add. the humidity on the coast is just fine year round. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”
