Magnet Fishing in NOLA - Update! First gun recovered!
The first of June I posted about my kids new hobby of magnet fishing in the waters of New Orleans. And he has found.... His first gun! A Taurus Millennium G2. Slide was locked tight with corrosion. And following my instructions, he attempted to turn it in to District 1 NOPD. Multiple calls with no response. Took it to the station house. No one there. Finally he forced it on a cop he found eating dinner. Oh, and the cop was fresh out of business cards or any other type of documentation for the turn in. And the effort to clear the gun resulted in everyone in the surrounding area being muzzled. A lot! So... all in all, a very NOLA experience. I am surprised it was not a Glock!

Just curious, are turds attracted to magnets?
This is something I would not want to attempt, especially there. Seems like it could be a bad/nasty hobby to take up.

I have had the conversation with him about the risk in all this. And in a city where lots of people are plinked on a regular basis, you would think the cops would take a greater interest. The kid made multiple calls to NOPD Non-Emergency line and waited an hour. No response. Another call to the non 9-1-1 line was made and this time he was told he could take it to District 1. No one was home! He was on his way home when he saw the cop eating dinner and managed to get rid of the gun. As far as a serial munber, the gun was pretty mucky and he was leery of manipulating it or trying to clean it since it was locked closed. I would guess there was a round up the spout. And I understand NOPD is quite busy so this was not a priority call. But to be sent to the station house only to find it closed was a bit much! Ah well. Just another day in The Big Easy. Oh... And this is in a town where they hold regular "buybacks".

My sister in law insisted on waiting that long. I explained to her that the area was not safe. Finally she gave up after exchanged insurance information and taking pictures. Understaffed department. Response time in certain areas of the city is quite slow.

Yeah, I would have saved it for a gun turn in / buy back and gotten a couple hundred bucks.
Kinda like the guy here who spent the better part of a month wanting to dispose of his broken Colt 32. Researching laws, finding someone to cut the gun up, taking photos, writing a letter, blah blah blah. What a waste of time.
But some people like to tilt windmills, I guess.
