George Santos, who was expelled from Congress last year and faces criminal charges for allegedly scamming political donors, is mounting a long-shot political comeback.

After a surprise appearance in the U.S. Capitol for the State of the Union Thursday, Santos said he would run in the Republican primary in New York’s First Congressional District on Long Island, putting him up against Republican incumbent Nick LaLota.

“New York hasn’t had a real conservative represent them since I left office arbitrarily, thanks to RINO, empty suits like @nicklalota,” Santos said on X.

LaLota’s office didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

A bipartisan supermajority in the House voted to oust Santos from the chamber in December after the House Ethics Committee said it found substantial evidence that he stole money from his campaign and committed other misdeeds. He has denied the allegations.

Only five other representatives have been expelled by the House. Santos became the first member to be expelled who wasn’t a felon or a supporter of the Confederacy.

New York federal prosecutors have also charged Santos with several crimes, including for allegedly scamming political donors, lying to the Federal Election Commission and illegally receiving unemployment-insurance benefits. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go on trial in September.

Democrat Tom Suozzi won a special election last month claiming Santos’s vacated seat, which represents New York’s Third Congressional District.

Santos’s long-shot bid to return to Congress will be much tougher than his surprise victory in 2022 when he faced no opposition for the Republican nomination and defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman in the general election. Now he’ll face an incumbent GOP challenger in a new district and opposition from other New York Republicans who pushed to drive him out of Congress.

Santos’s integrity was called into question when it was disclosed in late 2022 that he had made bold fabrications about his personal history, ranging from his college education to his employment record at Wall Street banks and his family’s connection to events such as the Holocaust and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He later explained questions about his religion—he had embraced a Jewish identity while running for office—by saying he was Catholic but also “Jew-ish.”

He has also claimed he was a star player on his college volleyball team and that he founded a charity that rescued 2,500 dogs and cats. Neither claim was supported.

Despite being expelled from Congress, Santos still holds House privileges that allowed him to attend the State of the Union.

The announcement contradicts his earlier pledge that he wouldn’t seek re-election for a second term in 2024. After the release of the Ethics Committee report in November, he said on X, “My family deserves better than to be under the gun from the press all the time.”

Reactions on social media to Santos’s announcement ranged from incredulous to humorous. John Avlon, a former CNN journalist who is running as a Democrat in New York’s First District, responded to the news on X with, “Looks like the circus just came to NY-01.”

“Bring It On,” he added.
