I was exposed to coffee with chicory. First time - never heard of it before. I liked it.

Question:
1. Is this usually ground chicory (root?) that is add to ground coffee in the drip filter? Or does one add chicory powder to a poured cup of coffee?

2. For home use, does one buy chicory root (like one might be nutmeg nut(?) and zest it at time of use? Or does one buy ground chicory just like ground nutmeg?

3. I assume one can buy chicory at the local supermarket (though I've never noticed it). Any recommendations for brand? Ground or unground?

Would like try adding chicory to coffee at home (ideally poured cup from Nespresso) but can add it to the ground coffee in the technivorm if necessary.

Interesting thought. I’ve never tried it, but I recall that old west cowboys drank a beverage made from chicory when they couldn’t get coffee.

If Nespresso offered chicory in Original Line pods I’d try that!

Serious about crackers.

If your local grocers has Community Coffee on the shelves then you have coffee that comes with chicory!

I'll second the Cafe du Monde for the chicory coffee. As long as I've remembered this is what my family use to brew Vietnames café sua da (sweetened condensed milk iced coffee. Its very strong on the on the chicory and caffeine so we usually cut the grind with Truong Nguyen (a Vietnamese brand) or any dark roast western style grinds usually 50:50. The following links has more info on café sua da Hungry Huy

I never had the need to source chicory separately as the Cafe du Monde is readily available at any Asain supermarket. I prefer using a Vietnamese style metal "phin" filter or a old fashioned perculator. I've tried others but reverted back to the 2 mentioned. Never had a Technovorm. I've heard it's the way to go for brewing coffee.

I remember hearing “mellowed with chicory” in advertisements long before I was a coffee drinker. Looks like that’s the tag line for Luzianne coffee.

I think I’d prefer to use my own coffee that I have on hand rather than a pre-blended chicory coffee mix. Any recommendations for chicory itself? Sounds like chicory would only be used with coffee grinds in the drip filter. One doesn’t put ground chicory in the cup as one would perhaps do with nutmeg or cinnamon or sugar.

If chicory alone isn’t available then I’ll try Cafe or Community.

I bought it at a local health food store. I would expect Whole Foods to have it if they are near you. It was powdered, but I don’t remember the packaging or brand.

I thought that my blend was way better than Cafe du Monde (better beans I expect).

Mmm. Now I want a pot of it in the morning.

Traditionally, you add roasted ground chicory while brewing your coffee.

Do be aware they use a heavy dark roast by design, Chicory is strong and you need a strong coffee to stand up to it.

Thanks. Good to know.

I'm wondering how to properly add it to my espresso from nespresso. In retirement, I don't use the technivorm much.

I'd look into a tea ball or something like that.

I've been told that, during the Civil War, chicory was used instead of coffee in some parts of the south, due to ongoing embargoes.

Sams club has Community Coffee with Chicory. I would try that first before making your own. It may be a regional thing in the NOLA area but I am sure you can order if you want to. Community has all manner of brews including dark roast and regular.

Got some Cafe du Monde for Christmas last year. Tried it as coffee and didn't like it. Bitter after taste. Used it for sweetened iced coffee over the summer. Guess I just like coffee in my coffee.

Coffee was rationed from November 1942 to July 1943.[1] There were bumper crops of coffee in Central and South America at the start of the war. But U-boat attacks on cargo ships and the diversion of cargo capacity for the war meant that a lot of it wasn’t making it to the US. The coffee that did arrive – including instant coffee -- was prioritized for the military.[2]
