This ice cream shop chain Handel’s out of Ohio opened up a shop near where my wife and I had dinner Friday night and we decided to stop and get some to take home.
Ewww. Not good ice cream at all, flavors were interesting but the ice cream was not very rich or creamy at all. I used to make ice cream 20+ years ago for a small bakery cafe/ice cream shop right outside Philly so I know all about butterfat percentages and all that and this ice cream did not have a high butterfat content at all. I’ve had better from the supermarket!
We have a dairy right up the road that has their own ice cream stand and that stuff is amazing; dense, super rich and creamy and just good stuff. This Handel’s stuff was a big disappointment to me.
Has anyone tried this? Wondering what you thought of it?

I like their ice cream, however I don't eat it very much anymore since I changed my eating habits 8 months ago
My favorite ice cream there, and actually the only thing I've had, is a "Hurricane," Handle's version of the DQ Blizzard. When I do splurge and get ice cream I get a peanut butter cup Hurricane. My boys really like to too. The ice creaam definitely has a different consistency than other ice cream I've had.

Thrifty drug store, when I was a kid, so 40+ years ago, had this frozen dairy dessert, or ice-milk. It was watery, and grainy, and I remember it as pretty great.
I’ll keep an eye out for Handels. I’d probably like it.

There's one in town. Tried it a few times. I found their ice cream to be excessively sweet and the flavors were underwhelming. Don't plan on going again...

We had one in my town years ago. Like you said, it’s just mediocre ice cream. We have a real ice cream place that makes the ice cream daily. Handel’s couldn’t compete and closed up. That must have been around 12 years ago.

There is one near our old place in Vegas. I always found it to be really good. Good enough that I can't help but wonder if the OP either got a "diet/low calorie" or other version on his visit . Place was always doing a brisk business. My particular favorite was their blueberry cheesecake.

One near me here in Ohio. It's alright. I don't really go out for ice cream that much but when I do, I'll stop at the Sheetz near me and get Ben & Jerry's. Not much for the chain ice cream places.
I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

No it was regular, not any sort of diet/low fat.
I think I’m just spoiled by our local dairy with their 18%+ butterfat ice cream and this stuff was maybe weighing in at 10% which is supermarket ice cream level. Ben & Jerry’s is 15% butterfat to give you a benchmark.

What I’m hearing is that the composition of Handel’s ice cream has at least one element that is baroque, and you don’t plan to go Bach? Meanwhile, I’ll be Haydn at Culver's.

The gist of it is, Handel's shut down an Alabama franchise owner, over a 5 year old FB post (at the time), then in their press release announcing he was being cancel cultured, saluted BLM, according to the old owner, it was reported by a disgruntled ex employee...
Word to the wise, never post anything you don't want coming back on you.. Ever...

You should be drummed out of town for that.
