A visitor approached a New Yorker on Lexington Avenue and asked, "Can you tell me how to get to Grand Central, or should I just go fuck myself?"

?For being disingenuous about the grace and civility, so prevalent in NYC?

I admit that NYC people do behave better there, than they do outside of the 5 boroughs - but they become simian in FL and SC, and nearly that in PA.

I asked a cop in San Francisco how to get to Union Square and he said "Get a fuckin map". This was pre smart phone. So I think it is a city mouse vs country mouse situation.

I've never been to NYC proper, but I had a really bad experience as a 15 year-old kid trying to navigate through Newark airport with my two younger brothers without our parents. Our flight got cancelled, we got lost and separated, and the attitude of every member of the public we encountered was exactly like what is described in the OP. Even the airline employees were assholes until the cop mentioned below set them straight.

I'll be forever grateful for some compassionate security ladies (this was pre-TSA) and a local cop who helped us out, otherwise I don't know what would have happened. I've never been back to that area, and have no desire to ever do so.

The interpretation of “go fuck yourself is highly contextual; if said while smiling might be a warm greeting Big Grin

Made me laugh. All honesty New York City is the safest place I’ve felt in the world when I’ve traveled..
I think one of the first times I was there, I ran up to a beat cop because I had no idea where I was and where I needed to go, and he was so kind. Recognized a tourist, I suppose.

I guess I make a point to avoid the shady places, though.
