Tell me this doesn't take you back to better times
I don't get into debates about who is(are) the greatest guitarist(s) ever; it's art, not a footrace. There's too many different styles, and the best add textures that are not simply technical. As fans, we like what we like, but I think if there was an anonymous poll among musicians, Glen Campbell would probably be considered among the best.
There are some really good guitarists and musicians on this forum. Maybe they can chime in on how difficult it would be to do the William Tell Overture with a full orchestra. In any case, I am a big Glen Campbell fan:

My absolute FAVORITE song. Just wish it was a little longer. Galveston is right up there close to it.

Absolutely, Campbell is near the top of my best 10 list. And a clip from his best friend (and golfing buddy).

Not to take anything away from Wichita Lineman, this this video always makes me smile. And seeing the admiration on all the others' faces says it all.

One of the best songs ever written.
There are 3 kinds of people, those that understand numbers and those that don't.

Other than ego, I am not surprised at all that Eddie Van Halen would want a lesson from Glen. As mcrimm said, Glen was a member of the Wrecking Crew.
The Stone Temple Pilots seemed to have very high regard for him too. This is very good:

I remember listening to “Wichita Lineman” in the “old days” of my youth; then remembering THAT song made me remember the song “Watching Scotty Grow” by Bobby Goldsboro which I always thought was really good as well. Yes, better times in many respects…
