Missing .dll file fix
Firefox has cratered, reinstalling shows this problem --

This seems to be the most direct way to fix using the command prompt but doing so goes nowhere, nothing happens. This link refers to Win10 64 which I use --

Brave is my default browser but I do have some uses for Firefox (saving YouTubes for one, which Brave won't do).

Not so simple as downloading an uncorrupted .dll file and plugging it in, huh?

I take it you already tried this. Did you register the dll?

Win10 64 bit, for example: https://answers.microsoft.com/...3b-bb77-3f30be2954ba

I didn't, the link advises against third party .dll's. I'll try to follow what your link suggests but the command prompt seems to not produce action at the moment.

use the search box, type 'cmd', then right-click on the command prompt item & select 'run as administrator'.

and for those who care, typing sudo in the windows command prompt doesn't work, I've done it a million fucking times Smile

Thanks, snidera, I think that's gonna at least get me on track to ferreting out the problem/solution. I access that command prompt so seldom, I never remember exactly how to do it.

It looks like the rest of this afternoon I'll be dealing with a nasty slush before a very hard freeze over night so I may not get back to this issue for a while.

OK right clicking on Command Prompt, selecting "run as administrator" just opens the command prompt window but not running as administrator. Can I physically type something in that command prompt window to run as administrator?

In some cases running the following command from an elevated Command will help.

sfc /scannow

Find the "Command Prompt", right click and "Run As Administrator" then type the command, and press the enter key.
(type CMD in the search window, should see the Command Prompt)

Restart and see if it helps.

To ensure you are running the Command process as the administrator, open a command prompt (as any user context), type the string below, and hit enter. (you can copy and paste it).

You will need the administrator password.

runas /user:administrator C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe

Firefox seems to be running. I did the minimum, c&p'd a third party .dll and just plugged it into system 32, to heck with following instructions. I guess all is ok, I'll have to play with it, off to the slush. Thanks again to the magical hive. Big Grin

the only difference when running as admin is the starting folder. (and the nag box to allow the program to make changes if you have that turned on)

C:/windows/system32
instead of
C:/users/"username"

"Why didn't you google it or go to Microsoft instead of asking here?", if asked, should get the response: "People here know what the hell they're talking about." The answer was received and working within 90 minutes.

I would like to apologize to anyone I have *not* offended. Please be patient. I will get to you shortly.

Yeah, going the first way leads to a rabbit hole of links and sublinks, on and on, I knew it couldn't be that complicated.

at least it's a happy ending, even if you don't get it working.

FF still works so I guess that was it.

Added bonus? Windows built in back up hasn't worked for months. I use VEEAM for back up, Windows as a secondary just because. I thought I was going to have to reinstall Win10. Because VEEAM works fine and no other problems, I was in no hurry to reinstall Win10.

Magically Win backup worked fine tonight, not sure why I even tried to run it. I'm thinking that missing VCRUNTIME140_1.dll must have been the problem.
