...but aborted my attempt 1/10,000th of the way up.

I spent a week and a half in California seeing my Marine son at 29 Palms. And had time to tour Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Joshua Tree National Parks. I got a chance to climb the rock fall up to the base of El Capitan.

I'm going to post some of my pictures in different posts.

Great pics and smart move, Micropterus. Glad you made it down safely! Wink

After reading some of the other El Capitan thread recently, we watched "The Dawn Wall" and started watching "Free Solo." I enjoyed TDW but FS seemed too much like Russian roulette to me. You might get to the top this time but if you keep pulling the trigger and making such dangerous climbs without safety equipment, the one with your name is likely to come up eventually.

You didn't count your own height - I think you made it maybe 1/9,999th of the way. Just keep tryin'! Remember, it's not the fall, it's the sudden stop....

OP: with extra training & dietary preparation, I've been able to achieve almost watching chilling climbs such as yours WITHOUT even requiring much safety gear any more....

I'll say, I have much respect for anyone that can get up even a few yards free-climbing. I saw nothing even a rock-monkey could hang onto. The crack i had my left hand in only was an inch or two deep. Maybe that's enough for some people.

Awesome. A true inspiration.

But careful there.
A man has got to know his limitations...

I did about 1/550,000th of the Application trail once. (about 20 feet IIRC)
But I was much younger then...
