Got a Lay off notice today

sureshot45Got a Lay off notice today
And just when I was digging out of the divorce money hole. I'm lucky in that I still received my mid year bonus and get my full month's salary and will get my retirement contribution at the end of the year.
Can't say I blame them, work has been slowing down and there really isn't enough to keep 2 people busy let alone the 4 people who worked there and I was the low man on the totem pole but it still sucks. Made some big changes and gave up a bit financially to take this job and I'm still 3 years out from my Professional Engineer license. There is chance of a call back but with the recent divorce and now this it feels like a good time to completely reset and pursue other paths.

WarhorseGetting laid off sucks, but as you say, it may be a good time to pursue other endeavors.

StorminNorminSo sorry to hear as a lay off sucks ass! Been there, done that. There are other jobs out there, but you have to apply like hell to all jobs, not be picky, and something WILL come along. Even if it is a job to hold you over to find the job you really want. I wish you the best of luck. Also don't be too proud to apply for unemployment while you search. The employer pays for it, not tax payer dollars; at least in Texas.

This job was as a Consulting Engineer for Mechanical, Electrical and plumbing systems. Prior to that industrial refrigeration and different types of construction.

Lucky again, no alimony due. She got a car and money from my retirement account. I got to keep the debt (home equity loan), another 6 months and it would have had it paid off.

83v45magnaI winced when I saw your name next to the the thread title. Quite a year. I'm so sorry for your troubles. As others have said, things have a way of working out.
Like someone else said, don't hesitate to start unemployment. About 15 years ago, I was laid off and, not knowing how it works, waited till I had run through all the money I had. I had to get absolutely to the end of my rope before I would consider filing. By then it was way too late. Not a good feeling, even remembering it just now.

It depends. If you have a good relationship with ex spouse you work it out with her. Reach an agreement for a reduction. If not on good terms you hire an attorney and petition the court for an adjustment. That of course takes money and the spouse may have to wait. Hope that helps.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

JimTheotiming is never good for crap like this, but you got a lot in your favor even if it doesn't feel like it. Happened to me when I was 59.
You're young, in a good field and now have an opportunity to pursue better options (personal AND professional).
GREAT luck (not good but GREAT luck) for you is possible.
I should be tall and rich too; That ain't gonna happen either July 19, 2017, 07:24 AM

chellim1It'll work out.
Generally, it sounds like you are on a better path. Best wishes.
"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
