I received a letter from the DMV to renew my DL online or by mail .
I've had my DL for 50 years and this is the first time they ever gave
ME the option . My wife has done it for years but they have always made me do it in person . I don't know what changed but it was so cool to grab the laptop and 10 minutes later I'm done . Five dollar " Convenience Fee " . No problem .. Big Grin

I think it all varies by State, age, & time since last DMV visit. I’ll do whatever I can to avoid going in person to the DMV, though WI I’d MUCH better than MI.

As a kid in MI, just about every time I was sent back for more paperwork. It was his fiefdom, RIP.

I wish I could on line renew.

CDL has to renew in person. I parked mine about ten years ago to avoid the physicals. Still cannot bring myself to let the endorsements go completely.

I've been surprised to be able to do mine online the last 2 renewals. My picture is 12? years old.

A visit to the Michigan Secretary Of State, at least in the larger population areas, is like spending time in a special kind of bureaucratic purgatory. A soul sucking experience.

I have also renewed the last 2 times online. It will be a total of 15 years with the same photo. Had to stipulate I had seen an optometrist prior to renewal. In 2026 hopefully I can upload my own photo, but I doubt it. I don't really look my photo anymore.

Each state has different laws regarding licensing. Here in Iowa once you pass 70 you can no longer renew by mail, you must go to DMV to have eyes checked and a new picture taken. At least they make it relatively easy by having appointments. Also past 70 there is a five year limit on the validity of the license and I seem to recall at 80 the length is 2 years.

Is the convenience fee related to the method of payment or no? Certainly online renewal is more convenient for the state, AND costs the DMV less to process as well...Just sayin' Wink
