Two spare bedrooms. Is there a std size?
24x48 seems a bit small. What about a door? A single interior door seems weird. Builder says a decent set of bifold doors run about $800. Thoughts?

Home despot has bi-fold doors from $200-$2k….

But standard louvered bi-folds are between $200-300.

Install shouldn’t take more than a few hours. Maybe that’s what he’s including in the rough price-his time.

If I was DIYing it with some already rough opening, I’d expect it to take less than a day, including the trip to go buy it.

Get your doors from a professional millworks company, not Lowes or Home Depot if you want anything of quality. Buddy of mine use to own three apt buildings and would buy doors from them because they were "cheap" and would spend a lot of time fixing them because there were deficiencies in how they were hung on the frame.

I'd expect something like that in an apartment but otherwise it definitely seems small to me. My personal choice would be no door; just a finished opening. You can mount a barn door later at your convenience. Least favorite is a pocket door.

$800?? He’s blowing smoke up your ass…

Here’s a solid core primed prehung door 36” wide (2-18” doors) for $500 retail. He should be able to buy this door for less than that.

Depending on your particular application we used to like 36” to 48” doors for closets.

Also regarding your closet dimension are you referring to framed dimension or finished dimension?

24x48

I'm assuming you meant 24" x 48" but that tiny size and bifold doors are both pretty out dated.

I looked at about 25 homes less than 5 years old (most new construction) when I moved here in 2016, and normal for my area was a single door with a 42"d x 72"w. It's like a mini walk-in closet. My home stood out since the builder put built-in dressers in the guest room and "kids" rooms.

If the rooms are side by side then both rooms get a closet half the wall length (e.g. 12' rooms get 6' wide closets, and 15' rooms get 7.5' wide closets).

I know several guys that do a mix of renovations and new construction work around here. Best I can tell the going rate (labor) to hang a door ranges from $125-$250, not including hardware, mostly depending on size and type. $800 installed seems high for what would probably be builder grade "decent set of bifold doors".

Everyone seems to forget that contractors don't work for free.
Let's say the doors are $500.
Contractor has to first come to your house and measure. You also bullshit with the contractor and talk about all your options.
Next buy the doors and install.
Contractor is working at your house and not on another job, his day is now wasted in a sense.
Insurance, truck, tools, gas.
So how much really goes in his pocket?

I am not a contractor, have paid too much at times using contractors.

Thanks guys. Contractor is not an issue. Went with 24"x72"finished dimension. Will figure out what to do about doors down the road a bit. Everyone is happy.
