The old standard q-tips are not cutting it. I would like to try something better. I have seen some birthday candle you light in your ear. There was some cork screw gadget.

But what actually works?

Years ago my doc recommended Debrox and I still use 2 to 4 times per year:
  • fill up ear canal
  • wait 5 to 10 minutes. It'll itch/tickle.
  • flush with warm water
  • fill up other ear canal
  • wait 5 to 10 minutes
  • flush with warm water
  • Repeat 2x per day for up to 4 days.

First time you do it, you'll likely have some nasty chunks come out on days 2 and 3.

Put the shower spray directly in your ear. Upon exiting the shower, dry them out using a wooden sticked Q-Tip (you can't get any leverage with the new kind). Put it in as far as you are comfortable, and spin it. That's for maintenance.

If you've got some potatoes in there now, you can either use some peroxide or Debrox, or go into your local clinic and have them flush them out proper. Afterwards, go with the above and you'll be good to go.

(This from a fella who's had a lifelong problem with earwax, but not any longer.)

My daughter had a problem growing up, we just used baby oil to soften it up and then flushed with warm water/peroxide.

Ear wax softener and a really big bulb syringe. It takes quite a few squirts but eventually a pencil eraser will come out. Do not seal the bulb against the ear canal.

I'm curious to know if anyone has used the elephant ear squirt bottle pediatricians use in their office.

No. It doesn't. They are snake oil. Do not use these things.

I own one and haven't used it in years. Too awkward for DIY and less effective than Debrox.

Perhaps if I had partner with a scope it'd work better and be more effective.

Elephant Ear. Great product, amazing the amount of gunk that came out the first time.
