Sounds like a pretty good deal. It allows for investing in stocks with the child owning the account at age 18. Can be used to help pay for a home or perhaps trade school.

Sorry but I look at it as another government give away program of tax payer dollars.

I can think of worse things for the Government to spend our taxes on!

I'd be happier if it could somehow be assured that it won't be abused, but I am certain that somebody is already trying to figure out how to steal money from it. Somali "families" enrolling 50 kids would just be the start of it.

From another perspective, maybe this will increase the birth rate.

Considering the dollar lost 10% of its value this year and then add 3% for inflation, you will need to be investing in something that will get you more than 13% annually to break even at the current rates. This is really just away of taking tax money and using it to shore up companies financially.
