A toilet bolt broke, caused the toilet to wobble and now it's leaking so I need to replace the seal.

Should I replace the seal with another wax ring or a Danco Perfect Seal?

I've never used one, but I 'almost' bought a Danco Perfect Seal' when I thought I needed to replace the existing wax ring due to a mysterious water accumulation showing up around the base of the toilet. Thankfully, it turned out my problem was the Tank Gasket so I didn't have to 'go there', as the water was leaking down the back of the bowl (very slowly) and then showing up at the front and side of the base. I know this is of NO help, but get the Danco. I did however convince my brother to get one when he was having problems with a toilet in a VERY Old house and it worked quite well on an iffy/uneven floor so there's that. The reviews are excellent and that's the one I'd go with! Let us know how it works out... Wink

The Danco is reusable if you ever need to remove the bowl, where the wax ring is only for a single use.
The Danco was featured on a segment of Ask This Old House and the resident plumber, Rich Trethewey, liked them because they sealed well when the bowl didn't always have a flat surface to mate against.
I think he said the only downside was that it was more expensive than the wax ring.

Go with Danco, well worth the extra money. Very simple and fool proof, have used them twice. Was never sure with the wax ring that I had set correctly.

C'mon...half the fun of resetting a toilet is scraping the 20-year-old wax off. Why would you want to change? Smile

What’s the lifespan on the plastic one?
Cause I know a wax on will work forever.

I just use a double wax ring. No issues unless the floor sucks.

The wax ones don’t go bad. It’s the floor or some other problem, like kids rocking the toilet, or overweight people, but the wax doesn’t evaporate, break down, split, crumble.

When I remodeled my house in Livermore my guy insisted rubber rings when we bought new toilets for the baths. Assume it was the Bay Area weather ?

Had a leak here in the south and my plumber here said are you insane when I suggested rubber and do wax. So I think it’s climate dependent.

From the Danco Perfect Seal webpage:

"The patented seal design combines specially designed rubber gaskets with encapsulated wax to form a seal that is three times stronger than a wax ring without the mess. Unlike wax rings, the Perfect Seal stabilizes toilet bolts and allows the toilet to be repositioned as needed."

"Seals if there is movement in the toilet or the floor, regardless of flange height."

Oh, and Zero mess...Plus if it's not quite right the first time, you get a do over! Seems the best of both worlds/designs to me... Wink

Wax ring all the way. Get the ones with the plastic funnel-like piece in the middle also I like the extra thick ones unless it's a thick plastic flange sitting on top of the tile. 5/16" closet bolts over 1/4".

I have had them be too thick to seal on one occasion. Otherwise they work well.

Figured I'd close the loop.

I used the FluidMaster version:

I also shimmed the toilet so it is mounted solid.

Hopefully I won't have to do this again any time soon!

I have repaired dozens of stool leaks. Worked as a maintenance plumber in two campuses. Wax always works. I like the one mentioned earlier wax with horn(plastic cone). When you put it on use your fingers to pinch the middle to make it taller. Unless the flier is really bad or the seating flange is low it will seat.
Wax has been around and used for decades…must be a reason for that

The last few toilets I have installed for me and family, I have used the Danco parts kits. They allow for more leeway and you don't give up any protection/seal in doing so.

Might want to check if Danco will work. Using the old toilet will leave wax residue and if the new seal uses adhesive, the wax residue will interfere with it. Also, I have had problems with the wax-free seals on a 4x3 flange.

Wax ring all day. If it's not tall enough, throw a #1 on top of a #3. Use your weight, not the screws, to compress the wax. I have done countless of these, and they simply work.
