Yes it does! Used to hear them a lot more around here and then they were gone. Now they are around some because of the 7th SF area.
Used to be able to recognize the Pave Low sound also. Now it’s the V-22. Hueys of course from my childhood living at Ft. Benning early 60’s. Now they come down from Ft. Rucker and fly the beach and head home.....
I love living here, it’s an aviation smorgasbord!!!

They all sound like Freedom to me!

Place your clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark.

Every time a heavy helo flies over me I get that excited/relief feeling of "thank goodness I don't have to walk back".
Any other Heavy Weapons Grunts get the same sensation?

I worked on 60's for 25 years, they do have an unique sound

True. They are quieter than a -46 as well.

Well, according to a couple Italian Marines I knew, they said those and Apaches make a "wop, wop, wop" sound.

They also claimed that's why Italians made the best helo mechanics. Wink

Back before Covid, when I was working downtown, our office was just across the street from a parking garage that has a helipad on top of it. Both the Coast Guard and National Guard used to practice there. CG flew both Blackhawks and Dolphins, NG flew Blackhawks. Some of the local TV stations fly their Rangers in there too. And the occasional Robinson trainer. We pretty quickly got to be able to tell by the sound what kind of bird was landing there. I don't recall them ever flying any Hueys in there, though they may have done before we moved into that location.

Its not as distinct as the old UH-1 Huey, its a flatter sound. Compared to the common Jet Ranger's and Airbus Eurocopter's, there's no mistaking there's a lot of power going through the sky when a H-60 flys over.

There are some different blade choices which can create a different sound. We have some quieter/hush kit versions also, which IMO sound significantly different than the more common varients. Also, helicopter noises change slightly with different weights or loadouts.

Also the sound changes depending on the track and balance of the head or something like a crack in a tip cap.

The most "fun" I had was sling loading a 14,000 pound howitzer under a CH-54.

Yes, spend enough time flying around in them or walking under them and you can pick out their distinctive sound. Same goes for Chinooks, Lakotas, and Apaches.
