My sister is a sales person and 100% commission. Yesterday she was told by her boss (small business owner) that he is required to come to work tomorrow (Thursday) for a mandatory meeting to discuss ideas for working in a safe environment.

Sister told the boss she was not comfortable with that, she's been 'following the rules' and did want to come to work and meet with the 9 employees in an enclosed space.

Boss told her that everyone else would be there, but if she wanted to Zoom in she could, but my sister would have to pay for a Zoom subscription since the meeting would go over 40 minutes and that's all you can get for a free account.

Is that crazy or what?

My sister does not want to go, but I think she will end up going because she is afraid of losing her job. (she is currently on furlough)

Furloughed? = no pay

Come in for a meeting?

At minute 39 on Zoom, bail! What are they going to tell her that she has not heard a bazillion times already?

After the Free Zoom session ends just rejoin the meeting again. That is what I do. God Bless Smile

seems like he is attempting to make 'reasonable accomodations'

I'd attend and wear a mask if I was that concerned or do the Zoom thing

we are going to be dealing with a lot of these situations as we all 'get back to work'.

if she likes working there -- she should try to figure something out

She should go to the meeting.

And tell her to stop watching the news.

Yeah... she should try to be there. Don't shake hands, wear a mask if she wants, sit 6 feet away from others... but go.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Pretty much my thoughts but she’s got to do what she feels best for her.

Does she go to the supermarket, Home Depot, fast food place for take out? Not trying to be a dick but I'm in the camp of this virus safety being mostly a scam. If she literally is avoiding stores then I guess it makes sense. But if she does go to supermarkets, then I think she is just trying to make a point to the boss.

In any case I'd Zoom in and just "lose connection" when time is up. I've been bumped out of a few Zoom meetings due to my crappy internet. They haven't fired me. Yet.

These go to eleven.

This panicdemic has created mental health issues for a lot of people. No, I am not saying your sister has mental health issues.

People who were compulsive hand washers are now much worse, agoraphobia{fear of leaving your house} has increased and the general level of anxiety is off the chart. The mental health issues will take a LONG time to treat.

That's my feeling.

Look: I nominally supported much of the shutdown/distancing stuff. Not because the "news" media had me panicked, but because, in order to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system, it made sense to me. But eventually we're going to have to return to some semblance of normality. And that means, among other things, meetings. In real life. With other people.

There are ways to minimize one's risk. Wear a mask. Wear gloves. Keep hands away from face. Stay away from visibly sick people. Disinfect rigorously--particularly before getting back in the car.

It seems we're getting a handle on this thing. Enough is enough. We can't live in mortal fear of the Wu Flu forever. It's time to start getting back to living.

I'm with Marsy on this. Not for health reasons at all, but for business reasons.

Ummmmm... is approximately 108 times during a ten hour working day a bit excessive? Asking for a friend. Smile

Time to get back to work. It sounds like the boss is looking that direction, and he wants his important folks there.
