Haven't done this before but considering starting to do this, given the loooong wait last year.

Question: do my wife and I both have to have ID Protection PINs in order to file electronically (MFJ)?

Free File Fillable Forms opens Feb 12th. I *believe* you verify identy near the very last step , using a number off your previous tax year return.

I do my taxes through TurboTax and if I remember correctly, we had to get PINS the first time we filed electronically, but we never had to since, nor do we use a number of our previous year's return but TurboTax might be doing that for us without our knowledge.

I don't get money back ever, but I file that way because I don't trust the USPS to deliver my return to them and I don't want to incur their wrath.

Flash-LB, I don't know if you use the online or download/CD version of the software. I use the download/CD version and from memory, turbo tax populates that info. If you want added protection, there is a screen to enter your driver's license info. It's not totally obvious but you can bypass that screen.

I had a friend tell me they paper filed last July. The IRS has cashed their check so it's clear they got the return but I'm told the IRS website still shows the return has not been processed. I've hear the IRS has millions of pieces of mail that have not been processed.

ID Protection PINS are not required.

I assume 2020 will be the same as prior years and if you use commercial tax software, the system will have you select a 4 digit PIN. This is not an ID Protection Pin. The software will walk you through the process. If you happen to call the IRS about your return, they ask for the PIN as an authentication step.)

An optional IRS Identity Protection Pin provides more security but is only good for one year. Link In the past this has been limited to victims of identity theft. Beginning 2021 everyone can request a (6 digit) Identity Protection Pin. Note, this type of PIN is only good for one year.

After getting the PIN the first time, IRS will mail your new PIN every year. I do not reccommend getting the PIN unless you have had a problem, as it becomes a pain in the ass when the letter is delayed or lost.

What took you so long? Smile I've done it for years, using the TurboTax free e-file. I have the refund direct deposited. It takes roughly 8 days from the time of filing to getting the deposit. This is also how I got my "stimulus" money quickly. I do have a simple return, however.

Yup. Previous years AGI. This year is free TurboTax prep. Very simple and straight forward questions. You can do it.

No. I've had an IP PIN since they first started the program. My wife does not have one. Mine is sent to me every year, and I enter mine, only, in the appropriate box (they have two boxes, one for you and one for spouse). But you do not need an IP PIN for either of you to file electronically. It just adds a layer of security. I forgot to put mine on my return one year, and the IRS did not accept it, which is good to know. I was able to re-file with the IP PIN and all was good.

Wife was always firmly entrenched in the hard copy camp.

The wife had been getting an ID PIN every year, but hers has not arrived...yet. What I am reading is that it should have been here in December or early January. Maybe they are late in sending them out?

Mine came in early January. It was the first document I received that was needed to fill out the tax form, before any 1099s, etc.

I would check with the IRS on that. Imagine the problems if someone has intercepted that letter and can then file for your refund. As I mentioned in my previous post, mine came in early January, as it does every year (since 2014).
