Yeah, for the many problems that my dad and I had when I was young, his supporting my playing guitar was never one of them. There were times when he'd come in my room just to listen. I had an Epiphone SG that looked exactly like the one you ordered. If you have the opportunity, take your son to a guitar store and let him plug that guitar into a good tube amp with the volume wide open. Rocking an E power chord at ear splitting volume is guaranteed to put him on cloud nine.

The Mexican made Squiers are good or even very good guitars, but there will be limited choices with 'buckers from Fender.

Thanks for all of the input and best wishes. I have kind of thrown myself all in to support this interest of his because he has earned it.

He recently committed to play D1 college baseball and through the years of hard work to reach that goal and maintaining attention to his academics, despite the turbulence of being a teenager through this COVID mess, he has earned a combination of athletic and academic scholarships that cover all but a fraction of the cost of college.

He has had to grind to achieve his goals and I hope that his developing interest in playing guitar offers him a healthy escape from the pressures he will face as he continues to chase his dreams.
