Yeah, for the many problems that my dad and I had when I was young, his supporting my playing guitar was never one of them. There were times when he'd come in my room just to listen. He'd request songs. Sometimes I'd play for him and sometimes I didn't feel confident so I complained about his presence. I regret complaining now but maybe give him space if he feels agitated by not being able to play for you at times. See, I wasn't angry, I was embarrassed.

I had an Epiphone SG that looked exactly like the one you ordered. If you have the opportunity, take your son to a guitar store and let him plug that guitar into a good tube amp with the volume wide open. Rocking an E power chord at ear splitting volume is guaranteed to put him on cloud nine.

You can believe me when I say they are WAY ABOVE their price point.

The Mexican made Squiers are good or even very good guitars, but there will be limited choices with 'buckers from Fender.
That Epi SG will make your boy happy, and it is a good guitar. Cheers.

Thanks for all of the input and best wishes. I have kind of thrown myself all in to support this interest of his because he has earned it.
He recently committed to play D1 college baseball and through the years of hard work to reach that goal and maintaining attention to his academics, despite the turbulence of being a teenager through this COVID mess, he has earned a combination of athletic and academic scholarships that cover all but a fraction of the cost of college.
He has had to grind to achieve his goals and I hope that his developing interest in playing guitar offers him a healthy escape from the pressures he will face as he continues to chase his dreams.

It can feel like you’re going to get accessoried to death, but I heartily agree with this. Ear training is very important and being able to pay in tune is critical. A lot of guitarists think this means having the guitar in tune, but those aren’t necessarily the same thing.
As an aside, I wish my father had been this supportive of my playing. As it was, I got a lot of mockery and got called “Guitarzan.” I suppose he thought it was clever, but it stung like a bitch, just as intended. You, however, are doing it right.

Got home yesterday from Florida and the new toy was waiting for him. He loved it. Got a little video of his first performance

Judging by the smile, I’d say he’s pretty happy with the guitar

Epi SG is a great start!!! If he takes care of it, he can keep it forever or upgrade to a Gibson.
FYI, girls like guys that play guitar...

And girls don't like guitar players per se, they like what is cool and popular. When guitar was cool and popular, they liked guitar players. And they liked the famous ones that were on stage. Playing guitar in your basement for YouTube is not the same thing.

Thanks for the kind words and the laughs. I can assure everyone that the last thing he needs help with is attracting female attention, lol.
