... until the 7.6 earthquake.

The pool water sloshing out is impressive.

Nah, it's got it out of it's system now. Perfectly safe to visit. You might want to be a little careful of which hotel you pick, that's all.

I pulled up the USGS site for this earthquake, and the seismic sensor locations in Bangkok are 890 to 930 km from the epicenter. There are about 6 different intensity contours that can be overlayed, and Bangkok is outside all of them.

I've lived in the US's two seismic hotspots, Alaska and California, so I have a history and interest in earthquakes. Additionally, I had over 2 dozen geotechnical engineers working for me at one point in Alaska and learned quite a bit about the subject. My two takeaways:
  • A M7.7 has a lot of energy and is felt a long way.
  • There must be some shoddy building to go along with the destruction in Bangkok. I say this because seismic sensors I pulled up in Bangkok were intensity level III, IV, and V which should be no damage or very light damage.

Looks like 12 minutes later they had a monster aftershock of M6.4, and four more between M4.5 and M4.9.

Here is a map if anybody wants to pick vacation locations based on avoiding potential earthquakes:

Doesnt Thailand have really cool beaches that offer deadly tsunamis to enrich your tourist experience?

Definitely. I really like the version I posted as it shows frequency and magnitude. I feel like it's common knowledge on earthquakes in California and the "ring of fire", but places like Western South America are not common knowledge. For example, my coworker was in a high rise hotel in 2010 in Chile when the 6th largest magnitude earthquake in history occurred (M8.8, 550 deaths, 12000 injuries). He knew about the potential for earthquakes and had some preparations with him, but the hotel was ill prepared to take care of its guests.

That was Sumatra, or Fukushima (which gets you Godzilla from a gecko as a bonus!)

The pool video is freaking me out. Imagine you're in the pool chilling with a beer and suddenly, woosh, you're riding a 30 story slip and slide down to the pavement.

A friend of mine recently moved to Krabi (not sure about the spelling) down in the southern end of Thailand. He said they were in the ocean swimming and never even knew there was an earthquake. He's in a beautiful area. I would love to go visit him.

Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.
