Blue Island police, Cook County Sheriff’s Office begin offering access to mental health professionals on-scene Login/Join

Blue Island is a Chicago suburb. I am noting that CPD is not offering this service. Should prove interesting.

BLUE ISLAND, Ill. — Blue Island police and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office have teamed up to offer virtual access to on-scene mental health professionals.

The agency has become the latest suburb to partner with the Sheriff’s Office Treatment Response Team — a group of mental health professionals who provide round-the-clock mental health responses via Zoom video conferences or phone calls.

“Service calls involving a mental health component can turn volatile extremely fast and can be difficult for even best trained officers to diffuse,” Sheriff Dart said. “Our co-response program allows individuals in crisis to be heard and gives officers on-scene time to better understand the issues and decide on the best course of action.”

Launched last year, the program began with just the sheriff’s office then was expanded to the Oak Lawn Police Department.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said they have been in talks with other suburban police agencies who are interested in the program. With the addition of Blue Island and Oak Lawn, the program is now available to officers serving more than 200,000 Cook County residents.

Yeah, that's about the only way I'd interact with them too.

I mean, you wouldn't want them to risk their lives or well being, you know, like LEOs do every day.

Cuff'em and stuff'em, let the judge and the court shrink sort'em out.

A mentally ill person in a domestic call is usually past the point of reasoning things out, and is either a threat to others or to themselves. Hence the reason police were called in the first place...

No it is not. We used to play them in football. They had some tough customers. Blue Island though is not Lawndale.

I am curious as to how this works out since some of those outside law enforcement have been pushing for this for sometime.

Some years ago, when my department embraced Community Policing, I was required to meet with various neighborhood watch groups and other groups of residents who wanted input in the departments approach to policing. Inevitably, there were snowflakey types who wanted some warm and fuzzy approach to the work. My response was:
"I work a single man car. My passenger seat is empty. You can ride with me and put your ideas to the test in the community you reside".
Amazingly, no one took me up on the offer!

I'll start at the top, work my way down.

Sheriff Dart is an Assclown. He's always been part of the problem and not the solution. Maybe Dart himself can come out on the street with a slice of pizza and help out. Better yet, he needs to spend a weekend inside the Jail, help out on "The Bridge" or "Gladiator Division". If not, he needs to stfu and let the adults talk.

The Drs involved in this on-line tomfuckery need to be out on the street, in their own cars, responding to these jobs IN PERSON.
This whole new approach to Policing, especially the "I don't want to get my hands dirty" mentality- two words: FUCK THAT! You want to deal with a mental, well, get off the couch and go deal with the mental!

Trust me, if there's any good take-a-way from any of the "defund the police" shit over the past few years, one of the biggest has got to be is getting mental health professionals out on the street dealing with mentally ill people!

I was waiting for your opinion. BTW I doubt it will be Psychologists on the street. Most likely much lesser trained "mental health professionals".

My dept has been doing this for 3 years. Mixed success. With calmer people dealing with depression it has helped a few times, including with a coue vets I have dealt with.

Most of the time, when the person is amped up it is not going to work at all.

The real practical issue is the people who are calm and rational enough to do this, are also calm and rational enough to be talked into going to the hospital and seeing a counselor in person anyway.

Allegedly**** They're coming!
I'm not holding my breath, but they're supposedly coming.
Who, how, where, I have no idea.

I highly doubt that there are going to be any actual Dr's responding or out on the street. I foresee either nurses that are "mental health professionals" or some regular "Joe" that has been to a few days, hopefully more of training.

Either way, I can't wait until they're out on the street! That's going to be a fun week!!!!

This. You can't help somebody who doesn't want help...and those who do actually want it will cooperate and let you take them somewhere to get that help.

Our local FD recently started responding to mental health calls, and they've all been trained in this new "Cares" program to help them do whatever it is they're supposed to do with these people (I assume it's probably what we've been doing all along, except they're unarmed and have no legal authority to detain anyone, so I'm not sure how that's supposed to work). Just this week I heard them go on one and five minutes later they were hollering for the PD on the radio, lol. Sounds like it's working out really well Roll Eyes.
