My mother often drove me by Truman’s home in Independence, MO. After his presidential term ended he drove himself home – no secret service protection. He was (uncommonly) a common man.

What do Pres. Truman and mr kablammo have in common? Both sat at Mozart's piano in Salzburg. The difference is that the teenaged mr k snuck back into the room while the tour group were going downstairs. Mozart, BTW, is buried in an unknown pauper's grave.

He also wrote an angry letter to a critic of his daughter's piano recital.

I heard a story, a fellows car broke down in Independence, he pulled to the side of the street, knocked on the nearest door, asked for help. The fellow got a local gas station to do a repair, the car owner said "thanks, you look like that jerk of a pres Truman". "I am that jerk of a pres Truman".

Scuba Steve SigWe visited Truman's home in Independence this year before the crazy erupted and the kids earned their Junior Ranger badges. We toured the house, which Margaret set up just like how it was when Truman died. It's a 1970s/1980s time castle. It wasn't until some time after Kennedy that he received protection. They had to put up a fence beforehand to keep gawkers off his lawn and out of his windows.
