New Comet: “Atlas”
I gotta say that new comets often disappoint…

“A comet called Atlas, discovered in December, is on its way towards Earth and could appear as bright as a crescent moon - unless it breaks up from the Sun's heat first.

Atlas is close to Mars' orbit at the moment but is increasing in speed as it makes its way towards the Sun and will make its closest approach to Earth at the end of May.

It was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert system (ATLAS) in Hawaii and takes its name from the initials of the system.”

Pretty cool if it holds together- it will be visible to the naked eye. I remember in 1997 when Hale Bopp passed by and how you were able to see it unaided also.

I remember the previous one. The Applewhite Heavens Gate suicide cult in California did a mass poisoning over that one. People get stupid with their superstitions.

The Hale-Bopp was bright enough that a guy I was flying with one night thought it was a 737 going the opposite direction.

After listening to the wailing in the early morning hours years ago in Riyadh when there was a lunar eclipse, noting that thousands or millions of years later, mankind is still barking at the moon, the insanity of the celestial superstitions doesn't surprise me much.

It will be cool to see if the comet holds together, though.

It does seem like an odd name, if you know the story of Atlas.

I'm having issues with the link loading properly. Does it say when and which direction to look?

As long as it's not 'comet right atlas', it's OK.

Most of these turn out to be a bust. I've been looking forward to a really good one since the comet kohoutek in 1973. I'm still waiting.

Hubble telescope captures images of comet ATLAS shattering

Should’ve been named Icarus. Flew too close to the sun. Frown

“The Hubble space telescope has captured the clearest images yet of comet ATLAS and found it has shattered into dozens of pieces each at least the size of a house.

The comet was discovered by the ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) robotic astronomical survey system in Hawaii in December 2019.

It became incredibly bright up until mid-March, with astronomers speculating it could be one of the brightest comets in decades - but it wasn't to be.

When they name a New Comet: “Parabellum” I'm going deep underground into my bunker.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
