That is a really busy area of town, even though its out west a bit.
When I travel that way I always hit the job an hour early / leave an hour early because of traffic.

No one I know was involved in the collapse but having family members that tend to be on the road for work and in general that can potentially be in that area, I immediately checked in with them to make sure they were ok. Everyone was fine thank God but my brother actually texted me back from where he was quite a few minutes later that he saw it shortly after it collapsed from the Florida Turnpike Northbound that runs perpendicular and over the road in question (SW 8th Street / Tamiami Trail / 41). Way too close for comfort!
Continued thoughts and prayers for those involved and affected by this. Seems South Florida can't catch a break from tragedy.

Utah does it a lot. If you're ever coming down to SLC from Park City, turn south onto I-215. The 45th south bridge was installed in a weekend. They took about 6 months to put it together on the the side of the road prior to installation.

Check out what it was supposed to look like. When were they going to put up the support cables and support tower? What the hell were they doing adjusting the tension cables prior to adequately supporting the span?
Looking like criminal negligence to me...

^^^^^ This. I was wondering about that. The articles mentioned it was a cable-supported bridge but I didn't see any evidence of support cables. Something was really messed up in the installation schedule!

From this picture and what the drawing portrays, it looks like the contractor built only ONE-HALF of the bridge and called it good. That company will be bankrupt and the engineers and senior officers of that firm are going to be indicted.

Reports starting to appear that one of the builder's employees made a call to warn of cracks in the concrete two days prior. His voicemail stated that the cracks weren't a safety concern but would have to be addressed.
quote:
Florida’s Department of Transportation said Friday that an engineer left a voicemail just two days before the bridge failure, notifying the department of cracking in the concrete.
A transcript released Friday shows Denney Pate with FIGG Bridge Group saying the cracking would need repairs "but from a safety perspective we don't see that there's any issue there so we're not concerned about it from that perspective.”

I'm not an engineer nor do I play one on TV, but the bridge is backwards with respect to the cables as drawn in that picture. If you turned the bridge around, the cable stays would line up with the angled columns between the roof and floor of the span just like they do on the other side of the supporting column.

Wait, wait, FIRST they put up the spans, and THEN the means of holding them up?
WTF?

It does look like that...but looking at other pics online of placement, it looks like the pic you posted is wrong....maybe photoshopped?

MIAMI (WFLA) - Matt Morgan of Morgan & Morgan will file the first lawsuit stemming from last week's deadly bridge collapse in Miami, the lawyer said in a release.
Morgan is expected to sue on behalf of a victim injured in the catastrophic incident.
Attorneys for the personal injury behemoth plan to hold a press conference Monday to discuss the lawsuit.
"It is imperative we act quickly to secure critical documentation and data," Morgan wrote in a tweet on Sunday.
Six people died when a newly-installed pedestrian bridge collapsed at Florida International University.
Police said Saturday they believed they had recovered all of the victims' bodies. By Sunday, all six victims were identified as Brandon Brownfield, 39, Alexa Duran, 18, Rolando Fraga Hernandez, swald Gonzalez, 57, Alberto Arias, 53, and Navarro Brown.
The FDOT said an engineer left a voicemail to warn the agency of cracks in the bridge two days before the incident occurred. The school was reportedly also aware of the cracks before the bridge collapsed.

Worse than that. The contract was given to two (!) different companies (one was minority owned & the other one was female owned) for whatever reason. I'd like to hope they can keep everything built by the same firm with subs so they know exactly what is going on at the job site without needing to talk to a different company to know what they are doing (without scheduling a meeting to have a meeting about a meeting). Can't say for sure that the total cost was to be around sixteen billion(?). The firm you are referring to also had a bridge collapse on them last year.
The actual tower was scheduled to be built in the fall onto early 2019. If you look at the roof of the bridge, you can see the studs that the suspension cables were meant to be anchored to. Five employees were on the roof as it collapsed. The security footage shows this better than the dashcam video.

Yup, the white mock up of the bridge was a projected outline provided by Sweetwater. The overlay of the actual span is of the other side of the bridge. You can tell also by the center pier is mostly narrow and vertical, and the outer pier on the street side is still unfinished and in the wooden forms because the stairs and landings haven't been poured yet. The canal span pier hasn't been started. Good eye of yours.
