I’m in shock over this news, a guy that got to live the dreams of many many hunters, a North American sheep grand slammer, ex nfl player who started 2 major outdoor clothing companies.

It reminds me of Anthony bourdain, some people seem to have it all and be on top of the world. I guess you never know.

Yup, just wow....

Gave professional football a shot, had a cup of coffee in the NFL. After hanging up his helmet, went on to develop two technical hunting apparel and equipment brands: Sitka then Kuiu. I don't know him but, we've run in similar circles, he befriended enough investors and did his homework to create two brands which helped drag the hunting world into the 21st Century through design and technology. It was his vision and doggedness in convincing enough people that hunting could use the same technical products and innovations that were found in the outdoor industry.

Unconfirmed but, word about is he was on a sheep hunting trip, Alaska possibly, with his young son and father when he took his life.

That's just flat hard to believe! I wore a KUIU tee shirt just today. Really curious to hear more about this.

There seems to be some speculation that he suffered from head trauma from his time as a football player.

Oh wow, that's really a shame! I see from his Instagram that he just finished a sheep hunt with Don jr. Really shocking turn of events. I feel bad for his family.

Hmmm. Repeated concussion / TBI from his football days, maybe?

I don't get why people still think because you're successful at one part of life that you can't have demons.

Tons of rich people have proven this over and over.

Some people even become wildly successful trying to escape those demons.

Or create those demons trying to become wildly successful then trying to stay wildly successful.

It's trite, "but no matter where you go, there you are," and "sooner or later, you have to get to know the man in the mirror."

I don’t think anybody really thinks that, being surprised and thinking what you said are different things.

Suicide and mental health issues have been ignored for years. Stigma is somewhat less than it used to be, but still an issue. Most people will seek professional help for a heart attack, but not for depression short of maybe getting a pill from their doctor. People have come to believe that taking a drug will solve all of their problems.

Was reading about him recently and his ram “Goliath” he killed in Cali (August edition of Hunting magazine). Really sorry to hear this, it’s going to be tough for the family and his 10 year old son.

Yup, I believe his recent desert bighorn is also pretty darn big, I got to meet him at sheep show last year and listen to some of his talks. When I was first getting into sheep hunting, his advice on gear and training got me a long ways. Really a sad thing.

Selfish prick is not what his family would say. They want donations made to CTE research.

He died because he abused his brain, out of ignorance of the risks at the time he played football.

In an interview in 2016 Hairston told CNBC that he was suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, which is a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. Research has shown that football players in particular are sufferers of CTE.

The disease can only be confirmed after death.

“I played linebacker, and the way I played the game, I led with my head. I played the way they tell us not to play now,” Hairston told CNBC. “I have all the symptoms of CTE.”

Disgusting
He “died” because he killed himself, that’s fact

You and I both have no clue what was in his head
People should stop lecturing like they “know”
All we know is the end
Man up
Get some help if you need it, don’t puss out

Didn’t say he didn’t have a medical condition
Enough with the “camouflage” about that
That is NOT the issue
He checked out
He left his family without the one thing needed most... a husband and father
I call BS
Self absorbed prick
His family may say, “give so others won’t go thru this”...
Yeah, exactly, the pain of someone murdering them selves, because we are hurting so bad from his actions.

I ain’t fucking buying it -No sale
Pity? got plenty
Got a pair of balls?
Act like it

Where was this alleged CTE when thousands, “played” the game, like my old man, with nothing more than a chunk of leather on their head?
Oh yeah, that’s right... they went on to be members of the CCC or fought on some distant pacific island in worse conditions we can even imagine
AND then came home and raised families, went to night school and acted like
MEN

What a nation of pussies we’ve become

work every day, have for the last 11 years with those that have served in the most horrible, violent, gruesome shit life has to offer

Man the fuck up, I say
Or As Marcus Luttrell and his group preach,
DON”T QUIT !
Of course, what does he and thousands of his comrades who have been thru worse shit than banging their head playing a fucking game, “know” about this kind of thinking?
