Just when you thought it couldn’t get much worse for Iran, it appears that their largest warship, the Kharg, caught fire and sank in the Gulf of Oman.

Can’t say I’m unhappy about it and the Iranians are t saying why it sank.

Can a fleet replenishment ship really be considered a warship?

I read that, about the same time the fire broke out on this ship, Iran had a big fire at one of their refineries.

One almost might suspect sabotage. Wink

I'm sorry for any sailors lost at sea, no matter where they come from - the Sea hates us all equally, but that's about the limit of my sympathy for the Iranian Navy.

I'd think that if there was anything that could even remotely be considered mysterious about it, they would have already blamed us or the Israelis. Although with Biden in the White House, maybe the Iranian gov't considers us "friends" again?

Would've preferred the 'sinking' to have been a Revolutionary Guard ship, as opposed to the Iranian Navy. The Iranian Navy is a pathetically underfunded service filled with 'sailors' who aren't devoted or, fanatical enough to be in the IRGC Navy; you know how authoritarians like to have a 'separate service' of enforcers, *cough, cough* I mean devotees Roll Eyes . Nevertheless, I ain't shedding any tears and this will diminish their limited capability.

If its armed, yes. You also have a ignorant press that designates any ship under command of a Navy and/painted Haze Grey as being a 'warship'

You get into grey-area definitions with the US Navy's designation of USNS or, Royal Navy's Royal Fleet Auxiliary which have mixed military/civilian crews and a few defensive weapons at most. I believe the RN uses some of those ships as platforms for ship boardings and policing.
