What is it that makes one better? Materials, craftsmanship? Sound? Amount produced?

All of the above?

I ask being completely ignorant on the subject, just curious.

Well it’s a number of factors, and some of it is reputation, a lot of it is the materials used in the body, the volume of the body itself and to a certain extent the strings.

There are players much better than me that can identify strings. Didn’t believe it possible but I watched it.

On a more personal level every guitar is going to sound just slightly different and you pick the one that seems to sing to you. Three identical guitars on a rack won’t sound the same. But one will stand out.

Martins have similar construction and quality that produces a family of instruments with consistent tone. You can pick out differences based on body style, tone woods and bracing, but overall, they set the standard many others strive for.

Yes Martin selects their wood based on cosmetic appearance. Can’t say for sure how the guitar will sound until it’s built.

The amount of time a person spends on the detail work of the guitar also play a huge factor. Things such as making sure the string height (action) are ideal, fret ends are filed to not cutting the players fingers, wood (rosewood costs more than mahogany), electronics, etc.

Plus, most Martins are made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania and employ hundreds of American workers who take great pride in their work. The factory offers tours for free if you’re ever in the area.

Martin guitars have been played by some of the biggest names in acoustic guitar music. It’s kinda like when Jack Bauer used a HK USPc 9mm on 24 and then people started getting back into them. Big Grin

Congrats! Fantastic guitar. I am considering an OM from Martin at this very moment. My current acoustic is a Washburn I bought new in 1992.

I do have some other guitars/mandolins too, and I have implemented these within each case.

Humidity and temperature monitors that push data Bluetooth to your phone or to the WiFi pickup box that plugs into the wall. Then that streams the data to the cloud so I can track humidity and temp from anywhere at any time. The OEM batteries are rubbish (couple of months), but with proper Energizer lithium AAA batteries, the last for a very long time.

For what it's worth, my current belief is 45%-55% is ideal, and perhaps as important is that the temp and humidity adapt gradually. So if your house is AC and is running at 67 degrees and 40% humidity, don't take it into the backyard for a campfire if it's 88 degrees and 99% humidity.

That won’t hurt it. 45% is a good goal but it takes a lot longer for the guitar to react to a humidity change. The only real environmental change that will hurt it is letting it get really cold (like shipping in the winter) then letting it get warmed up too fast. The finish can get tiny cracks.

The D28 is the king. My father had (and we still have) a 1963 D28. Amazing guitar. I also have his 03 D42 and my brother in law has his newer D18.

Yes, I bought my D28 from Maury's back in 2019 and it was $500 less than today's pricing.

nhtagmember- congrats on the Martin, they are great guitars, an heirloom.

That is awesome! A Brazilian rosewood D28 is on my wish list of guitars to have and then pass on to my daughter.

What a coincidence. I bought my 2003 D28 from Maury's brand new. Been an incredible guitar for me. Has quite a bit of playing on it. It has opened up into a cannon.

I was buying things from Maury when he was just selling compensated bone saddles out of his house. Then he opened the store. Last I read, he's selling the store.

Wow, that's too bad. It was Maury I spoke to on the phone when I bought my D28, he was really nice and gave me a nice discount as well. I read about him on one of the Martin forums, seems he was one of the preferred vendors.

That is absolutely beautiful.

Few years ago the later Brazilian D28s were still somewhat affordable. This was late 2021 and I was looking at them just about ready to make a move after moving a D18 custom shop. But life got in the way and I never made a move on one. Now I'm afraid that I'm priced out of it.

I currently have a 2002 D15 (when it was still solid mahogany) and a 2008/2009 Hummingbird left to me by the family of an old Army friend.

Beautiful guitar. You can’t go wrong with a Martin. I have a mid 2000s OM35, I think you will be super happy.
