Interesting find on the side of the road today
The little missus and I were driving along and I saw what I was positive was a gun shape; my crow’s eye even recognized it as a Glock. We U-turned, went back, and sure enough…

The kydex holster was about 25-30 feet away from it, no round in the chamber, no mag located. My guess is someone had placed on the roof and gotten that far before it bounced. Lots of dings, scrapes, and banged up factory sights.

The Sheriffs department arrived and took possession; I expressed my interest in keeping it if there were no stolen/lost reports. He said he’d get back to me with the outcome. Fingers crossed, but I know if I lost it, I’d want someone to do the right thing for me.

Better to be found and turned into the Sheriff than some kid or gang bangers hands....

We get those occasionally. Usually the atf trace helps reunite the gun with the owner, sometimes not. In which case the finder can claim it (pursuant to a bg check of course).

I thought they didn’t keep those records. Wink

To be honest, that's what I thought too. I didn't think they'd have much luck matching a S/N to an actual owner, at least in most states.

They do around here. I’ve been contacted by LE about two handguns that I’ve sold. When I asked about how they got my information all that was said was, “Uh…uh…uh…”. Yeah. Roll Eyes

The ATF can trace it back to the shop that sold it; once that owner sells it, especially without keep record of the sale, it’s a dead end. I suspect given the fact that it was unloaded, and the holster was nearby, it fell off somebody’s car. I seriously hope if it’s possible to get it back to the lawful owner, but I won’t be disappointed if I get a call in a month to come pick it up.

The ATF can follow a serial # from MFG to vendor, and vendor to store. I'm aware that ATF or State Police does call our local store to get the customer info on a trace request. This comes from the requirement the store keep records of the 4473s.

This is not the same as saying I'm certain that the records are not otherwise available. Wink

For States that don’t require registration..

The ATF trace only identifies the wholesaler who sold it to the FFL. Then the ATF calls the shop and requests the FFL go thru his records and then the shop faxes the 4473 to the ATF. Then the ATF contacts the owner, by phone or in person to see if he had the gun or sold it in a private sale. If so, that’s the end of the trail.

Decent find for sure, be neat to get to keep it.

A few weeks backs I'm on my way to work one night, rainy and gross like it does here in the Pacific Northwest this time of year, and I just see a flash of red next to the ditch. "That's some sort of Milwaukee gizmo." Turn around and head back, and sure enough it's some sort of Milwaukee gizmo. Brought it home to my dad, and he's like "yeah that's like a $200 tool, nice find."

Damn, all I ever find on the side of the road are half drank bottles of Gatorade that don't taste like Gatorade.

They need to age a little more alongside the road...then they're GTG.

Do you really drink from half-empty bottles you find along the road? Eek

You can hold the bag on our next snipe hunt.

Speaking of snipe hunting, I used to do that back in MI. The quarry was Wilson Snipe, smaller than a woodcock, dark meat. Forget about the bag, there is a real thing with snipe hunting.

I see lots of gallon jugs of “apple juice” left behind in rest areas frequented by truckers. Nice of them to share with those less fortunate.

As an avid runner and cyclist, I’ve found dozens of cool items. Still use the Benchmark knife.

However, the weirdest find was…the dead guy.
