What is up with these mentally ill trans people and suicide? Deep down, do they hate themselves for what they've become?
It's kind of the other way around. It's people who are severely mentally ill who are convinced that going through a transition will somehow alleviate their metal health issues. Of course it doesn't in most cases so it just progresses to it's natural conclusion.

If serious, the deed would be done.
Agreed. On the surface this attempt seems to lack sincerity.

From what I gather, the lifetime suicide attempt risk for trans individuals is about 40%, and this is whether they get the surgery or not. In my opinion, it's not a coincidence that people who suffer from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia have similarly high suicide attempt percentages. These are all severe mental illnesses.
Every one of the trans individuals I've come into contact with professionally (I'm an ambulance jockey), aside from being trans, was also suffering from severe depression, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar, what have you.
Cutting parts off of someone who's mentally ill in an attempt to 'cure' them is evil.
Manning, on the other hand, is a traitor. I sincerely hope their next suicide attempt (there'll be another) is successful.
