My Q Garage door control question. Login/Join

I was reminded of a question I have by DrDan's question but not wanting to piggy back on his thread...

New doors and 8500 Liftmaster openers last fall. We have occasional very short power glitches here. Just enough to have to reset the clocks etc. but they disrupt my My Q openers, the wireless bridge or something. After any power loss the MyQ forgets whether the doors are open or shut and the phone app will not operate them until they are operated by the wall button first.

So...
Would adding the backup batteries to the openers fix that problem? Or would I also need backup to the wireless bridge or...

No experience with MyQ, but it really could be either or both.

My garage door 'knows' it is up or down by limit switches at the end of travel. It doesn't keep track, it's just 'dumb' ladder-logic.
The opener could be like that & just send a 'door open' or door' closed message to the bridge whenever the switches activate, which is stored in RAM & 'forgotten' when power glitches, it could be keeping track of it as well and forgetting when power glitches or it could be some voodoo that I don't know about.

Surest bet would be backup for all.
Most useful separate option would be backup for opener (can use when power is out).
cheapest will be backup for bridge (smallest power usage).
cost of backup vs inconvenience of 'having' to operate by wall switch (and I assume RF remote) is the deciding factor.

ISTR reading of problems like this with the MyQ system, which is why I took a pass on it. I'll be damned if I'm going to put a flippin' UPS on a flippin' garage door opener, fer chrissakes!

Our garage door has an alarm system sensor on it, so I can tell where it's open or closed, anyway--regardless of what the garage door opener "thinks."

I've had mine forget up or down a few times, but for the most part power loss or unplugging it haven't caused the app to loose function.

Pressing the button in the app even when it's said the wrong thing it's continued to function then corrects itself.

Overall it's pretty good...

I just thought someone might know the answer... with some testing, selective cutting of power I guess I could narrow it down.

Not really important enough to worry about I guess... but still a negative for an otherwise nice setup. If away from home or on vacation I may not be able to see if the doors are closed, or operate them if needed, something I paid (albeit a small amount) to be able to do.

I have the same ones with the battery BU. Works great, no problem when the power goes out. But, of course, your wireless router will be down unless it too is on a battery BU. So, if it is not, you won't be able to get to the opener via your app so long as the power is out and the router is down. But, you won't have to reset anything on the openers and they will operate up/down on battery for some limited number of times. I never have exceeded the limit.

The big issue I had was getting the MyQ and the bridge to work together, that finally resolved itself after several resets so that the Apple Home app knows if it's open or closed.

You could install a camera in the garage looking at the door some of the garage door systems out there come with a camera link as well..

Probably add a nest wifi camera to the garage either outside looking at it, or inside if it's not weather proof...

I installed 2 chamberlin ones with battery backup and MyQ. The MyQ has been awesome. My router is quite a ways from the garage and I have lost the wifi connection once or twice, but when it reconnects it always knows whether the door is open or closed.

.

I also have tilt sensors on my garage doors, which are linked to my security systems. MyQ has been somewhat problematic according to real world use.

Yea. not worried about while the power is off, that is usually less than two seconds, maybe once a month. The issue is the fact that I have no control via the app and can't see the status of the doors after a power blink / outage. Even if I wait for days, the app forgets / does not know the door position and will not operate them until I open and shut them manually via the wall button or remote.

First world problems I guess.

From your experience Sailor it sounds like the optional batteries might fix the problem.
