My wife and I lived away from where we grew up for over a decade. In that time, in several very large cities, not one vehicle accident.

Moved back pretty much exactly two years ago and have been hit three times. Two hit and run and one that did stop but she had cut rate insurance that didn’t pay squat so USAA sued them.

The third, one of the hit and runs, was tonight. We were in a construction zone going the speed limit (55) in the right middle of six lanes (with one on the left ending and the two to our right exiting) and a large pickup (like F350 size with a camper shell) almost rear ended us and ended up side swiping us pretty good.

Van will need some time in the shop for a new bumper, rear quarter panel, sliding door, side mirror, wheel, weird spoiler thing that Honda puts above the rear window and a new window in the sliding door as it’s scraped beyond repair and probably a handful of other things that I couldn’t see in the dark.

If I were to guess, the guy was going at least 80 and likely faster and we are very lucky our three little kids are fine because if he hadn’t swerved last second (according to the witness) we would have had a nasty rear end collision.

I’m beyond thankful the kids are OK. Lowlife scum like this should lose their license for good when they’re caught.

Had one witness stop, another called in a plate that the officer said didn’t come back with anything. They called in a Tennessee plate that starts with HN-. I could have sworn it was H1-. Didn’t get a good look because the jerkoff was going so fast and he gunned it after hitting us (and I was worried about the kids). Cop said that he’d try a few plates with some similar number combinations but not to get our hopes up.

Anyway, I needed to vent.

Thankfully everyone's ok, and you can chalk this up to just a major pain in the butt.

On another note, why haven't you got a dash cam for your vehicle yet?

That was actually one of the first things that I told my wife we should get after this. I’m not sure if one would have gotten the plate since it was dark and the truck was going to fast.

I honestly curse in the car on virtually every drive I make. The mistakes, carelessness and lack of attention is off the scales. Never in my life have I seen such poor driving as I see today. Nobody has any courtesy “It’s all about me, f u” driving, and the distraction smart phone driving is appalling and dangerous.

Glad you are safe.

This. Now I have a dash cam.

If you buy a $30 dash cam off Amazon or eBay you definitely won't record a license plate at night. However, if you go to review sites that compare 2 to 5 side by side they have ratings on night vision quality. For example:
  • this is Dashboard Camera Review's Top 5 list and several are rated very good at night. My dash cam (Street Guardian) is 2 years old, and at the time was their pick for night vision clarity and it's still rated good 2 years later.
  • this is Dashcam Talk's Best of '17 list and they actually have a category for best performers at night. This is the better of the two sites, and my 2 year old Street Guardian is still rated #2 for night video quality. The same form factor A119 is rated even better at night and it's half the price of the Street Guardian.

  • Thanks for the info. I’m going to take a look at those links this week and likely get one for both of our cars.

Huh, I thought it was just me being grumpy, but the idiot epidemic seems nation wide. Nearly T-boned last week by a high school kid, ran a stop at 30+. The list goes on, aggressive women drivers....yikes.

Certainly glad to hear you all are safe. It's like a friggin war zone in some places.

Is this good enough from my Garmin DriveAssist 50?

This ASSHOLE in his goddammed luxury car was in too much of a hurry to allow the van to completely pass me towing my trailer and just about caught my bumper. He would have NOT gotten away with it either.

If this was on the interstate chances are there’s a camera near by. Check with the DOT.
