O’Hare ground transportation question UPDATED Nov 18
Is there an easy way to walk from Terminal 2 - while dragging bags - to the Hilton? I think we’ll have to go down one level and walk two miles. OK, more like 1/4 mile.

We’re flying United into Terminal 5 late Sunday evening, will collect our bags and RON at the Hilton, and then fly home (MLI) early Monday. We’ve taken the train many times, it’s easy with a small backpack. With checked bags it’s much harder and my wife isn’t real strong. She’s also 75. Our current plan is to take a taxi from T5 to T2 and then drag our bags to the Hilton.

Is there a surface short cut from T2 to the Hilton or is the tunnel our only option? You can reply here or use the email in my profile.

I've never stayed in the Hilton at O'Hare but I know where it is. If you take the light rail airport train from T5 to T2, it drops you off less than 100 yards from the Hilton. It's just across a courtyard...closer than the parking garage. Maybe even closer than the terminal. You do have to go down a level, but I'd assume there are elevators or escalators.

I've taken the light rail from T5 to T2 a bunch of times, and it's easy. The worst part is having to go back through another security line to get to your flight in T2.

If the light rail is really out of the question the Hilton website says there's a shuttle from T5, but I know nothing about the details of that.

Been a while but, easy walk thru the tunnel and elevators on both ends so you're not dragging bags up and down stairs. But if you're taking a cab anyway, why not just drop at the hotel?!?

Does Hilton run a shuttle van?
Edit: I see that 92fstech posted the answer, while I was typing.

Thanks for the replies. I just called, Hilton does NOT operate a shuttle van when we land at 9:22PM Sunday. We’re leaning toward a taxi, we might take the train as we’ve done a dozen times.

In my OP I forgot to mention Hilton said there’s no hotel stand, we’d have to get off at T2.

V-Tail will back me up: At a certain age, dragging luggage on a train and/or a long distance is…challenging.. Smile

Also at a certain age you've (and she!) more than earned the right to not do that. I'd take an Uber or taxi, whichever is closer, from right outside baggage claim, tip VERY well since you just pulled them out of line and move on with enjoying my trip.

I wish you the best luck with your trip. I hate OHare! At one point, when the puddle jumper left Marquette, it landed at Detroit Metro. Now everything routes through OHare.

I agree here, you can pick up an uber right outside the door and be driver right to the entrance of the hilton. You other solutions sound like a lot of hassle, and by the time you get there, you will wish you had just taken an uber.

Ignore most of what I said. Not only am I feeble, I am also senile!

No T5 or train this time, we’re clearing customs in Newark, so ORD will be a United domestic arrival in T2. No train, taxi, or Uber, just a short walk. I still think we can cross the street at departure level and avoid the long tunnel walk, either way I will survive.

It IS an easy walk from T2, members were correct. We landed last night, stayed at the Hilton, we’re now awaiting a United RJ to home (MLI).

It is hard to spot at night, but the sidewalk is right next to the control tower that’s in between T2 and the Hilton on street level. It’s maybe 100 yds. Always an option is the longer but dry underground walkway from the lower (baggage claim) level.

Thanks to all for the tips.

Glad it worked out and you had a good trip, in spite of having to fly through both Newark and O'Hare!

We survived both, one secret is to leave LOTS of time between connections. Another is Global Entry with Pre Check. Mrs Sigmund is slowing down, so we asked for wheelchair assistance thru United. They were extremely efficient everywhere, including Athens. At unfamiliar airports like EWR and ATH, they knew their way around and - even better - where the elevators were!

We recently flew through O’Hare to MLI to visit our daughter in Bettendorf.

Was thankful for the cart service between gates. Without that, we would have never made the connection.
