The fear of losing it was not unwarranted. One of the students "lost" his wallet with his cash at the beginning of the trip. I'm guessing it was stolen.

Fantastic experience for her!

My eldest went to college in rural upstate NY. After Christmas break she flew int Newark and took the train into the city to transfer to another train upstate. Her wallet was stolen out of her backpack on that short ride from the airport to Penn Station.

She had everything in it. Several hundred in cash, her Visa debit card, and her Social Security card (which she needed for her work study job). The thief had run up hundreds in charges within a few minutes of arriving in NYC before she discovered it missing and called us.

Coming from a generally safe and friendly home town, she was not expecting to run into pickpocketing.
