Wife and I cancelled DirecTV a few months ago in favor or a Roku with Hulu + local channels. We pay for the local channels through Hulu because we live in a mountain community and I can't get the local channels through an antenna. Yesterday I read an article on cordcuttersnews.com about a new FREE service, Locast.

Locast is a non-profit that is re-broadcasting local channels in certain markets (Denver is one). Locast is being sued by the networks so who knows how long this will last, but I'll watch it while I can. I signed up earlier today and it seems legit (until it is shut down, if that happens). It's free, but they ask for donations in lieu of a monthly service fee (This is how they are hoping to circumvent copyright law).

My wife likes to record a few local shows each week...Survivor, Amazing Race and 1 or two others. Plus, I like to pause Broncos games for about an hour and then fast forward through the commercials. However, it doesn't appear that Locast has a DVR capability.

What is the best option for a low cost DVR? I don't need tons of storage, probably less than 20 hours total. We don't usually record movies at all. I see Roku has a unit with cloud storage, but wanted to get the opinion from the hive if I should get a stand alone DVR unit, cloud storage, etc...

Not exactly what you are looking for but this works great for me. I have an HD antenna and can record up to 4 shows at once with this. Just installed the card in a PC and setup the recording schedule. I have a scheduled task that moves all my recordings out to my NAS every morning. I can access them anywhere on my network.

We tried Hulu, DirectTV Now, and like YouTube TV by far the best. It includes DVR service.
