chbibcShotgun Training Photo
With my circle of friends ever shrinking I've been pursuing other activities like shotgun training. One day a month of training for 8 months a year, countless hours of practice, for the last 3 years. I enjoy it. This is a photo from last month's class.

If you lead them to water, will they float on their back? I read that if you can do that with a mule, you’ve really got something.
I bet with that much practice you are ready for the velociraptor apocalypse.

41Shotguns can be interesting in developing loads for shooting beyond 40 yards where most loads are tested. But beyond 40 yards, you see the patterns go to hell because the deformed shot starts to leave the pattern.
While living in Santa Barbara in the mid 70's, we tested loads at 80 yards using Tom Roster's goose loads published in the Handloader Magazine.
The Santa Barbara Press sold newspaper rolls for 50 cents that still had some paper left on them that was 60 inches wide. At 80 yards, you had to have some kind of sight on the shotgun to hit the center of the paper. Tom found that the Federal 1 3/8 ounce shot cup wad gave the best patterns. He also added flour to the shot cup to cushion the shot.
These loads were deadly on Snow Geese in northern CA. I once shot a turkey at 90 yards on a straight away shot. I jumped two turkeys and as they fly away, I missed the first one as he cut to the right just as I shot. I shot at the second one and it looked like he dropped to the ground running.
I found him laying in the leaves and stepped off the distance back to where I had shot. It was 90 yards and I still couldn't believe it so I stepped it off a second and third time. The turkey had three hits from BB's and was my lucky day.
