Years of running, then running on a torn meniscus (3x), and then being overweight, then some recent weekends climbing ladders finally finished off my right knee.

I had my right knee replaced about six hours ago.

Total knee replacement by the Makoplasty procedure (“robotic system,” protheses).

Now I’m resting comfortably in my RON room.

Sadly, I’m not stoned out of my gills on pain meds. But I’m hopeful.

A video of the actual procedure on a different patient. Be advised, I was a paramedic and am not squeamish, but there are parts that give me the Willies. There are other parts that are nothing short of astonishing.

Excellent choice using the robot. I work with a bunch of boomers that have had it done both ways and the robot is the way. I hope you heal quickly and wholly.

I'll need a right knee replacement at some point in the coming decade or two. But I've been babying it to try and stave that off as long as possible. Low/no impact exercise only, zero running (unless chased by a bear), and no heavy weights.

Hoping for the best speedy recovery and that things continue to improve ............... Have a friend whos wife just got out of the hospital 2 days ago after spending 9 days after going thru her 4th hip replacement in just 16 months due to a infection that has reoccured.. The doctors have not determined what is causing the recurring infections...... Am wondering if she might have some type of allergy to the metal that has been used in the manufactoring process........Hoping that the cause is found soon. ........................... drill sgt.

I had the same procedure exactly 2 weeks ago today. If your doc was anything like mine they likely pumped your leg full of nerve block and you will get nearly 48 hours of comfort before what they did to your leg sets into your brain. Then it’s going to suck, for 3 or 4 days, but every day after that it will suck less until you go to your first physical therapy appointment and then the sucking reaches a crescendo, but only if you do the work. Three times a day I go into a physical therapy induced Tourette’s outburst that helps me get that last little bit of bend. There is light at the end of the tunnel, more swearing equates to more function. Pain now equals less pain latter, plus possibly even a functioning leg. Good luck, it’s time for me to do my prescribed swearing, and I get my staples out tonight so I got that to look forward to. Stool softeners twice a day, powdered laxative at least once a day, lots of fruit, and stay hydrated. Gun stickers on your walker, and use gel packs or actual ice under the knee and the water pumper on top. Get well soon.

In addition to at the PT facility therapy, I was assigned a ROM Tech machine at home I get checked out on Saturday.



This is after being told I can’t ride the stationary bike at the gym for six to eight weeks. WTF? I’m sorry, that looks just like an exercise bike for people in wheelchairs, which in 2018 I got months of experience using.

But as in 2018 I’ll do the PT as directed, slightly pushing myself beyond their demands, but not enough to hurt myself. Then my willingness to do PT hard (two three hour sessions per day) not only got me out of the physical rehab about three months ahead of expectations, it saved what little sanity I still have.

Oh, and good drugs showed up but I'm not shnockered.

Glad to hear it went well. My wife had a partial knee replacement a few months ago, done by robot. It is pretty amazing the efficiency/accuracy of using the robot.

I was a longtime pre-hospital EMT that moved into the OR as an Anesthesia Tech. Let me tell you, ortho surgery isn't for the weak, it's honestly brutal at times. 7 years in the OR, was involved in many of these cases and yeah, they are something to behold.

These days I'm still involved in the OR, just in a different, non-clinical capacity now.

That is good advice for everyone to follow BEFORE they need surgery, too.

I had TKR on my left 12 years ago. Had my right 6 months later.
I will tell you what a carpenter told me about it.

I had my right knee replaced 2 days ago, had my first in home PT evaluation today. I was able to go home the same day. My surgery was 7:30 am and were driving home around 11:30.

I’m just now starting to feel some pain with the nerve block wearing off.

Glad to hear it went well and wish you a speedy recovery. My father is having his first knee replacement tomorrow morning and the second in about four weeks. He’s 87 and looking forward to being able to do his daily walks again soon.

My Dad had both done last year about 10 months apart. He's the model patient and does the exercises just like the doctor asks. He was golfing in 8 weeks both times. He has friends who didn't do the exercises and 3 years later they're still limping and in pain.

I am 9 months post-op from my Mako TKR on my right knee. Doing well, first 12 days or so was the worse. Do the PT, get a cold water circulator.

Large carpet slider is great for doing the heel slides.

Only thing that really hampers me at this point is not able to really bear weight on my knee while kneeling on the ground and some reduced sensation on the skin around my knee cap, otherwise went great.


At the 8 week FU Doc said everything looked great on the X-ray

I am 18 months post left TKR via the Stryker Mako system, the cold water circulator is a lifesaver. DO THE PT!
