I know there have been concerns about the transformers (or more specifically, the digital controllers for the transformers) in our electrical grid being compromised https://www.forbes.com/sites/l...etected-cyberattack/.

It was awesome when we did it to the Iranian Nuclear program with stuxnet, or when the Israelis blew a bunch of terrorist's dicks off with compromised pagers, but is it really that far fetched to think that the Chinese could do it to us, especially when we're buying critical components directly from them?

How about every cell phone that is built in China? I’m guessing there is info that could be extracted at any time. My new dishwasher can connect to the internet. I’m sure similar technology has been stuffed into a lot of Chinese made products.

They also made every router and modem I've purchased. I've suspected they've infected and infested everything they sell.

For 30 years I've been preaching how stupid it is for America to outsource manufacturing to a country with which we'll likely be at war with someday.

Bring manufacturing back home and let those people reap what they've sown.

I worked in high voltage substations my whole career . A lot of the electronic equipment that had US badging had circuit boards that were labelled Made In China . General Electric , SEL , and so on . If you know what an RTU is , you know it's the heart of substation controls . Chinese circuit boards in an RTU should scare the shit out of you .

I read a report where Tim Thot, if used on your home WiFi will capture every WiFi device on your home network and report analytics back to the Communist Government of China. I tell people not to use the app and it goes through one ear and out the other….

If the day ever comes that China decides to use all the weapons they have aimed at the U.S., there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth in addition to finger-pointing and, “How could this have happened?” including by the people who coulda, woulda, shoulda done something about it before it happened. Not every bad thing that could possibly happen ultimately does happen, and perhaps the horse will learn to sing, but just like the Yellowstone volcano the best anyone can hope for if they do is to not be around when they do.

for years I've worked under the assumption that EVERY Chinese student in this country is a potential spy for the CCP and that there isn't a single Chinese foreign national (including some citizens) that should be trusted

I would NEVER hire anyone, or put any of them in ANY sensitive position

I'll bet there are millions of these in use right now, and we can't replace them all

but we should start

This is probably why SEL is starting to make their own PCB's soon.

I thought they made their own in the beginning . Just like General Electric RTU's . Made in Canada stickers on everything . I pulled a board on one to check something and it was Made in China .

Shawn Ryan had a guy on that worked on electric substations and they have found Chinese components that are not needed for the type of equipment they are installing. I didn’t watch the entire episode yet but I believe they could control the power leaving the substation remotely.

Canada has a nasty habit of importing Chinese crap and putting a Made in Canada sticker on it.

They were caught last year selling steel and aluminum that they imported from China.

I think it is much more than that. China is poised, should a war ever erupt between us two, to bring us to our knees with the flip of a switch.

Maybe, i don't know much of their history other than the origins of their default passwords. The new facility is on the Purdue campus. SEL was keen to mention this factory a lot when I was at an SEL seminar back in April.

It is, perhaps, more interesting to speculate why this vulnerability (which should have been obvious) is being exposed rather than exploited. Virtually every discovered point of compromise can be turned back upon the perpetrator in (at least) a mis-reporting fashion and DoS, especially if the originator is unaware of the discovery. Why warn the bad guys that you know what they are doing rather than surreptitiously turning their own infrastructure against them?
