mbinkyBottom Shelf Whiskey — New Update Page 4
About a month ago I picked up a bottle of Kentucky Gentleman. $16.95 per 1.75L (regularly $17.95).
It is actually decent! Makes a great mixer.

FundmanThese booze threads always go the same way. OP asks about bottom shelf and half the people mention $30-40 brands.

GustoferR&R.
Tastes just ever so slightly different than Crown at about 1/3 the cost. $20 for 1.75L whereas Crown is ~$60. When I was in Maine last month we bought a jug for $12.99! If I were to ever move to Maine it would be for the lack of liquor taxes.

mbinkyI found the liquor prices not too bad in Maine but much better across the border in NH at the state liquor store.

rekstromElijah Craig is it for me. $22 around here and to me tastes better than many bourbons twice the price.
If I had to reach lower on the shelf I could do Evan Wms or Beam Black label, but probably mix those with soda and ice.

FundmanNot sure if we can trust the opinion of you guys from Maine since coffee flavored brandy is considered the state drink! Just kidding.

maxwayneYears ago my favorite Canadian was Lord Calvert. I thought it was really good until I got used to Crown.

FishOnWhile you may be able to get away with bottom shelf whiskey, stay the hell away from bottom shelf tequila.

2BobTannerOne of the advantages of living in Kentucky, you can usually find almost any of the bourbons out there; “Pappy van Winkle” can still take some effort.

This is my "go to" rye. Nice and spicy. Up in Maine it was like $18 but down here in NC it is about $23. I prefer it to the much more expensive rye's.

ensigmaticTullamore Dew. Blended Irish Whiskey. Last time I bought it was a bit more than $25/fifth. Very tasty. Surprisingly smooth.
For bourbon and rye: New Holland Artisan Spirits Beer Barrel Bourbon and Beer Barrel Rye run about $30/fifth and are my favourite bourbon and rye.

I have recently tried the McKenna 10 year old 100 proof and found it to be quite tasty, but not bottom shelf bourbon. I plan to give the "entry level" McKenna bourbon a try on my next visit to Wine and More Store.

If you ever get the chance try Costco’s house branded Canadian. It’s around 18 for a 1.75 IIRC and it’s anazing.

Rolan_KrapsI drank a river of Evan Williams in College. Still not bad for an inexpensive whiskey

BytesThe only thing better than good whiskey is good cheap whiskey. I bought a bottle of Kirkland (that's right, COSTCO) Canadian whiskey and had a few of my friends blind taste test it against Canadian Club 12 year. All chose COSTCO at 1/2 the price.

Swain0351I wouldn't quite call it "bottom shelf," as I reserve that for Kentucky Gentleman and Old Crow, but Evan Williams 1783 is a great bargain option.
$15/fifth or so and very drinkable.
