Livermore California, home to 2 national nuclear research labs. Both have been experimenting with radio nuclei, exotic metals, solvents, rocket fuels, explosive compounds ect since WW2. Livermore is also wine country. You have to go to France or Russia to find wine more radioactive than Livermore. It is also has some of the worse air pollution problems in California. Amazing they were able to determine Roundup caused this.

Judges don't determine the dollar amount. It's the jury:
Wait for the appeal. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

There was a recent settlement for a school groundskeeper, who used roundup regularly. They were able to prove that roundup caused his cancer. It would be interesting to know if Monsanto executives used Roundup at home, where they or their family members did the actual application. I suspect that the super high award was punitive, as most likely only a few roundup caused cancer cases actually make it to the court system. -c1steve

I bet he used a lot of products that could be "proved" to have caused his cancer, and they chose to target Monsanto. I'm not saying it's impossible Roundup was the cause, just that he was likely exposed to numerous things both in his professional and personal life that could be singled out as the culprit, if so desired. I'd be nervous about working with any such chemicals on a daily basis. I'm sure it's hard to not get the stuff on your skin and clothes constantly. Likely there were traces of various herbicides and pesticides all over his vehicle and home that he was exposed to 24/7.

This isn't just california. It's been an ongoing battle for a lot of years now. We were pulled out of Colombia due to the same arguments about glyphosate (roundup). I've been spraying roundup for a long, long time. 2,4-D, 2,4-5T, Parathion, Diquat, and perhaps a hundred other chemicals. 2,4,5-T, some might recognize better by the buzzword "agent orange." It was a common chemical in the US domestically for a long time, as was it's more common version used on nearly all farms for half a century, 2,4-D. It's always interesting that those who have had casual exposure can attempt to make the link. It's bullshit. That it came out of California is no surprise, where the color yellow, the letter r, and taco bell cause cancer on any given day, and everything has a Proposition 65 sticker saying that it's been found to cause cancer, but apparently only in the state of california. I've been bathed in the stuff, soaked through, often on a daily basis for months. Same for other chemicals such as "agent orange" and 2,4-D, yada, yada, yada. I suppose it's entirely possible that one day I'll die of cancer, if heart disease, road hazards, or simply flying under powerlines doesn't get me first. Funny thing is, I've been associating with professionals who work with these chemicals day in and day out, and have their entire lives, and I've been doing this since my teen years...and I know one individual in all those decades of association who has died of cancer. Bob's cancer was in his bowels, and he took a very long time...and he kept spraying well into his late 70's. It's possible...but frankly I think most of the claims are bullshit. In Colombia, locals had all kinds of maladies that they said came from glyphosate; they claimed boils and blisters and wild conditions that have never been linked to glyphosate. The spray operations were fast (because people were shooting), and very brief; high speed runs with a very quick burst of chemical and gone while taking ground fire...and that little tiny burst of chemical was supposed to have destroyed lives, eaten people's flesh, etc. No. The FARC destroyed lives. The heroin destroyed lives. The cocaine destroyed lives. The roundup? Not so much. Two billion dollars because someone treated their garden and later claimed they got cancer? My heart goes out to anyone who suffers with cancer, but presently the world health and the CDC can't even agree on roundup, let alone the EPA. These idiotic lawsuits are just feeding the frenzy, and are fueled by ambulance chasers after the golden ring. It appears they found one.
No, they weren't able to prove anything. They didn't have to; it settled. Proof isn't necessary. Just the convincing of a sympathetic jury who will seldom, if ever, be subject matter experts. Such trials are of really theater for spin doctors and settlements are throwing of the towel in chicken matches to see who blinks. Little more. A settlement is not proof of anything.

This. They in no way proved Roundup caused his cancer. That is pure nonsense. If you live in America or have genes you are surrounded by things that can cause cancer and/or already have the genetic nudge to get cancer. To narrow it down to Roundup is ludicrous. And yes I would take your bet that these guys use Roundup to kill weeds in the cracks in their sidewalk. Insane award.

Damn lawyers! Unless they were drinking the stuff that's ridiculous. I and others I know have been using that stuff for years with no issues. Simply a money grab.

This is absolute bullshit. Jurors are now research scientists? Deciding if something is actually harmful? Time for Bayer to STOP making herbicides and farmers to pass on the costs of crops without herbicides to the screaming leftists. He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.

Do a Google image search for "Porpositon 65 warning sign". According to the state of California, just about everything you come in contact with is "known to the state of California to cause cancer" How in the hell, in California, could they narrow down the cause? ______________________________ “I'd like to know why well-educated idiots keep apologizing for lazy and complaining people who think the world owes them a living.” ― John Wayne

I live in Livermore and this has been quite the news story. We also have the 1st nuclear power plant in the country ( no longer active). I still use roundup. I wear gloves when I apply it and wouldn’t recommend ingesting it. Local moms have lost their shit when it was discovere the school district still uses it. I didn’t see them volunteering to go pull weeds at all the city properties though.

I would like to see a comparison of the number of people who developed non-Hodgkins lymphoma who used Roundup and those who did not use it; also the number of people who used Roundup and didn't develop cancer compared to those who used it and did get cancer. Without such comparisons it is impossible to assess the risk, and also reasonable compensation. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth
