Saw a thread from 2017, but I suspect there have been new models introduced since then, so here's a new thread. Smile

I am looking for a gravity feed water filter for shtf and/or camping. So far I like the Lifestraw branded models, but know there are many good choices from other brands like Sawyer and Platypus and others as well.

I'm looking for the best blend of filtration ability (parasites/bacteria/viruses, metals, sediment etc), filter life, ease of cleaning/backflush, durability. Price is a concern but secondary to the above criteria.

So whachall like?

I’ve used a couple of diy kits to make them using food grade buckets. Using a ceramic filter similar to this. https://www.amazon.com/Gravity...FandGO/dp/B00XTJJIF2

We run an inline Sawyer mini.

I then run a steri-pen (UV) for 100% filtration on drinking water.

I buy them whenever they go on sale, but with backflushing I'm comfortable using one for a year at a time. The steri-pen is good for a couple years and then needs to be replaced or sent in for remanufacture. I've done it once already and the company gave me a free upgrade to their newer model.

I’m a pretty big fan of Ketadyn. Their pocket filter is awesome.

I purchased a Berkey last fall and we really like the water . The company gives amazing stats with the filters but who really knows what’s true. I only filter municipal water so I’m good with it . I really wanted to get the fluoride and lead out and this does it as far as I can tell . Filters last for years with occasional maintenance .

Ive gone through several water filter systems over the last few years. Long story short- at least for backpacking- the best system Ive used is a Sawyer Squeeze with the coupler and a Cnoc silicon 2L bag, along with 1-2 smart water bottles. You can attach the sawyer directly to the water bottle, or fill the 2L bag with water and gravity feed it into the bottle using the coupler. This system covers all the bases. Its quick, easy, light, and with the bag/bottle combo you have options if one should fail. The cnoc bag is far superior in every way to the crappy bags sawyers come with.
The squeeze has a much better flow rate and isnt much heavier than a mini. Backflushing is much easier than the mini- no need for the syringe, just squeeze the smart water bottle while attached filled with clean water. The new platypus quickdraw is suppose to have an even better flow rate than the sawyer and it looks a tad smaller.
Video with the system>

Agreed. Not gravity but probably the best SHTF water filter made. Don’t know when you got yours but I just saw they’re $395 now so I’m real glad I got mine a long time ago.Smile
