Wild bird feeders and bird flu
The WORST thing about bird feeders is that they attract RATS.

I will NEVER have another bird feeder!!

The timing on this sucks. All summer long, my daughter gives away chicken eggs - she only has 6 hens, but even that few over-supplies her. The birds aren't laying now, but will resume in the spring... after the price of eggs drops.

We are putting out one quarter of the food that we did 8 years ago.

Used to have 9 feeders and a list of thirty birds on a yearly basis.

Now between 9-12 species is all that show up.

I blamed it on the 300 wind mills that went up ,just east of us .

Turns out that although the mills do have a negative effect on bird populations,

The tall buildings with re to elective surfaces kill for times the birds than the generators.

Living in the Mississippi River fly way used to be a huge advantage for bird watching, not so much any more.

Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.

I'm just maintaining my normal protocol of wearing disposable gloves and making sure I wash my hands after handling the feeders as well. With the recent winter weather, the little feathered friends need as much help as I can give them to survive. I dumped some meal worms on top of the ice-covered snow in some of the planter pots this morning as well.
