Just for the hell of it |
I have a room that was painted blue with one wall a dark blue. It's getting painted a light color. I know I need to paint it with a primer first. Maybe even two coats. My question is what is a good primer that will cover a dark paint color well. I've used Kilz before to cover spots here and there but never an entire wall that was dark. Sherwin Williams has some primers but they are at least twice the cost of Kilz. I don't mind paying more if it will work better. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Benjamin Moore is one of the best paints out there. I've used both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore extensively and the BM is much better at color retention and application. Anyways, you want Super Hide primer from Benjamin Moore if you can still get that one at your local store. If not the one below. High Hiding Fresh Start #046 Primer or Sure Seal #026 latex primer would be my third choice. For the paint, the BEN one is perfect for your needs and a light color, it goes on easily and covers a heck of a lot better than the HD and Lowe's brands. I can usually do a bedroom with 1 gallon.

When my big kid bought a home I painted for him. Several walls were dark green and dark blue. I used Kilz to cover the original color. One coat with a roller on both walls, let it dry for several days and then it took two coats of a light color to cover the primer. I would recommend Kilz. Since painting all the rooms in his house (11), I bought a sprayer from Lowe’s, and I’ll never roll again. Kilz Premium will work fine (high solid primer) Use a Wooster or Purdy 1/2” nap roller. Don’t go cheap Good number for coverage is 300ft/2 per gallon 80ft/2 for a qt All products will say 250-500ft/2 for the most part but you better be at the pearly gates to get 400+ (or be real good at spraying) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Live today as if it may be your last and learn today as if you will live forever

Had to paint a room that was dark charcoal gray, almost black with light gray paint. The paint guy at HD sold me some $50 per gallon Behr paint and primer in one and promised me it would cover in one coat. It DID! A pleasant surprise.

I always use a 3/8" roller cover. The walls in all of my properties are relatively flat and smooth and I'd like to keep them that way. A quality 3/8" cover and a good paint brand covers just fine in one coat if necessary.

Have the primer tinted a few shades lighter than your final color.

You can have the store add extra white tint to Kilz too.
