Been looking at getting a router for a while now but not really sure which size to get. My usage would only be cutting circles in elevated dog feeders and cutting edges. Leaning toward a 1.25 hp for the cost but I'm all about buy once cry once.

1.25 or 1.5 horse is fine as a starting point. Do yourself a favor and get a plunge router (or a kit that includes a plunge base), and when routing out those holes in dog feeders, cut them in multiple passes with a 1/4" spiral bit (puts less load on the motor). You'll need to practice to learn the feed rate you'll need to use to best optimize your router's capabilities with different bits and uses. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. DeWalt makes good routers that aren't too expensive. Bosch routers are also good. I agree with a plunge router, particularly one that will handle both 1/4 and 1/2 inch bits. Here's a recent online review: Link However I think the 1.25 HP DeWalt they rate highly is too lightweight for your use. I'd pick one around 1.75-2.5 HP if you only will have one. Lots of router tests online you can Google. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

Definitely get one that you can use as a plunge router also. Both the Bosch and Porter Cable sets are very good recommendations. I have personally used the Bosch for about 25 years. I also have a 40 + year old DeWalt handed down to me that is still running like a top. All I've had to do is change the brushes.

When using it - feed slowly and AGAINST the direction it wants to go. Best to use some kind of fence to run against. Mine is a Bosch with both 1/4” and 1/2” collets.

My advice: Buy quality, but do not buy more power and size than you need. I went top-drawer. Nice router. Never used it because it was just too damn big and heavy. "America is at that awkward stage. I just bought a 2.25 hp variable speed Bosch at Lowes on sale for one heck of a deal. I have several Porter Cables in various configurations but this Bosch is impressive. CMSGT USAF (Retired) Chief of Police (Retired)

That Bosch combo looks like a good deal. For myself, I have a Festool 1400, and a little DeWalt for small stuff. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

I got the Bosch combo and love it. My only regret is not getting it first. I went bargain brand first and it came apart on me.
