Balzé HalzéI was in the city of Catania, Italy in Sicily partying my ass off. I was on a Military Sealift Command ship at the time, and we were docked at the port of Catania.
Those freaking sicilians. You know how they celebrate the new year in that town? By throwing stuff out of their windows. And I don't mean just trinkets. I saw couches, desks, even a damn refrigerator thrown out of a three story window.

Johnny 3eaglesI spent the passing of 1999 laughing my ass off at my associate's that had spent multiple thousands of dollars buying survival food by the ton, water storage etc. One guy bought enough chemical to convert his entire swimming pool to drinking water.

mcrimmI was on call at the bank I worked at. We had our fingers crossed that all of our systems were prepared for the big day. We'd been preparing and filing paperwork for a couple years before the change to 2000. Ho-Hum

bearstarrI was working OT on patrol and was on a K9 track right at midnight. Kids broke into one of the local Elementary schools. We heard the fireworks going off and knew what time it was. Caught them a short time later and paperwork the rest of the night.
I do remember having a very well equipped car that night with an AR and several hundred rounds of ammo, just in case.

ChuckFinleyIn an alley behind houses on Coronado drinking with some guys that were "not implicated" in tailhook, missing my retired UDT neighbor who took a flight with his wife to Tahiti in case the Y2K thing ended up being real.

Sigfan RoyI was flying a CG Falcon at midnight ZULU time (1800 local) in order to document whatever malfunctions might occur with the aircraft when the clock struck midnight ZULU. Flew a quick 20 minute flight around the pattern at KMOB, landed to check everything out, and then took a different jet on a flight to Gulfport, Mobile Brookley (now Downtown) and then back to Mobile Regional where we were based. Logged one ILS approach and one full stop landing.
Absolutely nothing weird happened and all the aircraft systems worked fine.
Later that evening my wife and I played scrabble at home. Our kids were 6 and 4 at the time so we didn't go out. Plus I'm kind of a homebody on NYE as I don't want to mix it up with the crazies out on the roads.

slosigSucking down Mai Tais in Saint Lucia with Mrs. slosig. Figured there was a vanishingly small chance that the Y2K bug would be a thing, air travel would be screwed up, and we’d have to stay longer. No such luck.

c1steveI was scuba diving in Canada, in 38 degree water. At least during the day. At night we went out to eat and bed early.
Dove on a sunken destroyer escort one day, different sites the other days. Breathing trimix, and suiting up in a drysuit. We had a grand old time.

FN in MTI was on shift for the Highway Patrol expecting Y2K insanity.
Which thankfully never happened.
Me and three of the female Troopers rung in the New Year at the GVW Weight Station with cigars and sparkling apple cider. I laugh about it EVERY year this time.
All of us retired now and we still keep in contact. It was a memorable, QUIET New Year. Especially after all the Y2K hysteria. LOL.

urbanwarrior238The whole Department Riot Squad was activated, 2 Officers to a car. Issued a case of MRE's each, cases of water. Stocked us up with bean bag and pepper ball rounds. Given sections of City to patrol and watch over. And we waited...and waited...and nothing happened.
Tried to stay awake, we smoked cigars, bundled up against the cold and hid in the under ground garage when the gunfire started at midnight.
It was a fun night of camaraderie and working something that seemed historical at the time.
At least we were all prepared.
