I was working for a major utility preparing for society as we knew it to end Big Grin

Police had the block around the HQ blocked off and you had to show ID to get to the parking deck where your ID and DL were checked again before entering. Then over the crosswalk to the building where another guard checked ID against DL. We were prepared for riots and people attacking the HQ if the grid failed.

Then on to work that evening where we tracked the time change in England and noted no dire consequences and slowly waited as the Eastern time zone changed and the world didn't end, then finally to us in the Central time zone. Nothingburger. Finally started releasing people around 5:00 AM as the US transitioned and system checks were completed and all was well.

All the work spent in the decade leading up to the big day paid off and here we are today, 20 years later and still kicking! Smile

I was flying from west Texas to Hartford, CT for my FIL's wedding. I was not a big believer in the Y2K fear, but told my wife if we had any delays that would put us in the air at midnight, we were renting a car and driving the rest of the way.

As it went we arrived well before midnight and no planes fell out of the sky.

Same thing we're doing now: Watching something on the tube, waiting until it was time to count down and pop the cork. Difference then was we made sure the pantry was overflowing, the gas cans and tanks were all topped-off, plenty of batteries, etc. Just in case.

I was a junior is High School and went to my church’s youth group Y2K party.

Now I am anxiously awaiting these boys to fall asleep so I can go to bed myself.
Hoping no one cracks off any fireworks and wakes me or them up.

Never been keen on New Years celebrations. I think maybe have been to three parties. Just another day in my book.

One as an elementary kid that was an overnight and I remember it because it was the first sleep over with girls.

A few years later my cousin got married on a yacht in the Boston Harbor it was a really cool wedding until it became the first time I experienced a drunk person first hand.
It was my Dad and it scared the crap out of me. I remember he could barely walk and talk while we were trying to catch a train back to the hotel. My step mother was livid and she is a very calm laid back individual. scary experience for me at the time but an eye opener for old Dad he still drinks but he has never been drunk since, not that it was a frequent occasion thankfully.

Then there was the Y2K party mentioned earlier.

Floating on the big gray bitch (aka, CV67) in the Persian Gulf. We flew earlier in the day but that evening was a no fly, with the cruiser nearby and some alerts set.

The ships gunners unloaded off the portside at midnight with Ma-Dueces and some 240s for a gun shoot demonstration. The M2s barrels were glowing hot and they seemed to shoot for a good 5+ minutes with some barrel swaps.

Some fake beers before bed then back to the grind, assuming Y2K didn't end the world.

I was working for major retail store as a Loss Prevention Officer. It was my part time job during College. My self and the Loss Prevention Manager had to come in at 12:00 to make sure the alarm system wasn't going to fail. We also had to come back at 5:00 AM to check it again.

I was in a house on McClendon Avenue in Atlanta, just up the street from Candler Park, not too far from Little Five Points. The house was a rental property which belonged to a friend of mine. At that time, we lived north of the city but the wife and I had been staying in this house since the day before because it made it convenient for us in terms of easy access to all the festivities going on, and we attended a couple of parties in that part of town, and planned to go down to Atlanta Underground to watch the Peach drop at midnight. But, it had been a big day and we were worn out, so we just decided to stay in the house and watch things on TV.
Of course thsi was the supposed end of civilization and I had been shooting down Y2K talk for a long time leading up to that night. I said that it was all bullshit.
Around this time, there was talk that Browning was discontinuing the High Power, so, earlier that day, I had purchased a brand new MkIII High Power from Candler Road Pawn Shop.

As midnight approached, I was sitting with the wife watching New Year's Eve events on TV. We were in the front room of this residence, with only the TV and one table lamp on. I was playing with my new High Power, and at midnight exactly, the house went dark. TV went off, table lamp went off. I mean, it as on the dot- "Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Hap-"

Scared the shit out of me. Zombie Apocalypse, here we come!

Well, no. Turns out that being a rental property, my friend had this table lamp and TV plugged into a timer. You know, to make the house look occupied.

Surprise!

No shit. I though that I had made a- err- miscalculation with my skepticism. Big Grin

It didn't take but a minute to figure out. I walked to the front door and flipped on the porch light, so...

No zombies

Still, it was funny.

Pretty certain I went to bed relatively early. Had my skis, boots, and clothing all packed up and ready to go for skiing on New Year's Day. Pretty much what's going on this evening.

In early December 1999 I was checking into a hotel and observed two guys working on the elevators. I jokingly asked if they were installing Y2K fixes. They said that's exactly what they were doing. I thought they were kidding. They said every elevator built since the 1980's has a clock and calendar. Weekday mornings empty elevators position themselves near the middle floors to shorten response time for departing guests. Evenings empty cars to go the ground floor to speed arriving guests to their rooms. Weekends and holidays, if two or more elevators are present, some elevators shut down on a rotating schedule to reduce wear and tear. Elevator guys were genuinely concerned that chaos might ensue if the software didn't get updated. Seem to have dodged that bullet.

I was working for a manufacturing and inventory software company at the time. Most certainly, if our customers hadn't installed Y2K upgrades, their software would have ceased to function. Dodged that bullet as well.

I recall that a local county sent out outrageous property tax bills to every property owner demanding payment for 100 years of unpaid taxes. Don't think anybody paid.

Me and my buddy were at the base of the San Francisco Ferry Building watching the fireworks. It was one of the most well-behaved New Year's crowds I'd ever been in. Very few belligerent drunks. Lots of strangers wishing good tidings to each other. No rioting. No power loss. No societal meltdown. No looting. No planes falling from the skies. No Gozer the Gozerian.

That was a little disappointing actually! Razz
