This is not a rant but rather an observation from recent experience.

I had a few odds and ends I thought I'd try and sell, so I thought I'd give these new online services OfferUp and Letgo a shot. After listing my items and dealing with several responses to each item from 'potential' customers, I feel quite confident in stating that the vast majority of the people operating on those flatforms are mentally retarded. Loved the guy who offered me $15 bucks for a like new in the original packaging item I had listed at $25 (New retail pricing is $49), if I'd drive it to his home some 25 minutes away because he was simply too busy to come pick it up. I can't tell you how many responses I got asking if this item would work for them. Guess Goggling it themselves was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to difficult an option.

Long story short, I think all donate all of these items to a local non-profit thrift store. My mental health is far more important to me than the few dollars I 'might' be able to recover on them.

I weep for the future....

It's the same on Facebook Yard Sale pages.

Most of these people want something for next to nothing and do nothing but play games.

I haven't used OfferUp and Letgo but I have used Craigslist.
People think Everything is negotiable. Some people just aren't very good at it. If something is already ridiculously cheap... don't even try to negotiate. Just buy it.
Some people are just going to waste your time.
You're right: you're probably better off donating small items.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Kudo's to you for trying to re-purpose some items. Sounds like your intentions were spot on and yes there are some of us good people out there.
All humanity is not lost.

It's just there are a lot more people lazier than ever.

Amazon and many others will bring useless shit to my door also if I let them.

Take the write off and only sell the bigger ticket items independently.

Cheers~

PS I miss your auto detail tips

I sent the following response to two different buyers..."Do you know what the word "FIRM" means? Never mind."

A while back, I listed a nearly new and expensive bicycle on Craigslist. Photos and detailed specs were clearly listed. This alerted many idiotic would be cyclists.
The main PITA was with people who asked me questions that could have been answered if they had actually read the ad.
I gave up and kept the bike.

I have sold numerous items on Craigslist including 3 cars. I’m convinced there is a buyer for everything. Sure, you get some nut jobs texting you where English is a second language but I’m not complaining.

I've got PESOS for you if you are willing to bring your goodies PLUS a bunch of other stuff I need from the US and I've been planning to buy for the past ten years. Hope you own a pair of large suitcases.

The PESOS are here if you want them.

Hmmmmm, I have had very similar experiences with those sites. Haven't sold squat off of either of them. Always get offers that are beyond ridiculously low. But have never had anyone make a reasonable offer or sold anything. Done posting on those sites.

Yes, I tried that letgo thing. Had a 100K PT cruiser, dead engine, does not run, parts car, listed in the ad. Will deliver within 30 miles, 100.00. What is the first thing that they ask me? "Does it run?" Needless to say I hauled it off to the scrap yard for a 120.00 after I got tired of typing "Read the ad!"

Yeah, been there... The fun part on eBay is when I have to buy worn and vintage stuff to make store displays.

Do you still have the old (whatever it is at the time) ?
No, We threw that in the garbage because we can get more for the newer one. (Oops!)
Um, Okay. I'll shop around and get back with you (never).

Good times.

You will get a lot of flea marketeers who want to buy low and sell high on those sites. We once did a yard sale advertised for 9:00am-5:00 pm and the bastards were knocking on my door at 0630 trying to get a deal.

I have sold 3 cars, two motorcycles, bought 2 cars, and sold lots of collectibles on Craigslist with zero issues. When I sell something of value I have the buyer meet me in the lobby of the local bank. Otherwise, I have them meet me in the parking lot at the grocery store. Never at the house.

I like OfferUp and Craigslist.

Sold a patio furniture set within 5 minutes of posting it last weekend.

Bought a like new Trek 7.2 with disc brakes for $300 the weekend before.

You haven't seen stupid until you've tried selling on one of the gun classifieds. Every detail can be painstakingly described but it doesn't matter. No one will read you're ad, so they'll ask you to describe it again. Was it a Ruger .22 or a Desert Eagle? They just can't remember. Most inquiries will be from what I call the inventory checkers. They love to ask if you still have the gun but you'll never hear from them again.
People also can't resist throwing out a ridiculous low ball offer. You're asking $500 but will you take $150 cash today? Best of all though, are the people that expect you to practically deliver something to their doorstep, at you're expense.

Yep. This is very similar to my son's experience.

His car got totalled and he had a set of snow tires with rims that he no longer had any use for. He listed them on OfferUp for $100. I thought $100 for newer tires and nice rims was a great deal and that they'd be gone in no time. Nope.

Like you, he got all kinds of idiotic inquiries: "Will they fit my truck?", "Does the bolt pattern match my vehicle?", etc. And, of course: "I'll give you $50 if you deliver them to me."

My wife does the Farcebook marketplace thing and sure, you get some artards asking inane questions and making hilarious lowball offers, not to mention ridiculous accommodations. You just ignore them and eventually the item will sell to the right person.
