In this instance it would be entirely appropriate to require a note from a clinical psychologist that she is too impaired to work. It is entirely legal and puts a stop to that behavior.

ZSMICHAELI taught undegraduate and graduate courses at several Universities. My best students were incarcerated in a medium security Federal prison. I would never consider teaching again.

ZSMICHAELOK. They were motivated to he in class. Better than being confined. THe majority of the class was in for bank robbery a crime that requires some intellect. Most had several yaars of college and plenty of time to read. Most of them were sociopaths and would challenge your knowledge. That beat the lethargic college student. Of course many were manipulative as hell, but I expected that. Most of them were quite well read something that surprised me. I did not mean to imply that they were model citizens. Not what I had expected and different from the county jails. I had expected characters out of a Capote novel. They were a varied group from LA to Chicago and New York.
We were treated quite well by the inmates.

ZSMICHAELYes Federal inmates. The Federal prison systems has various programs in place as a reward but also to help them earn a college degree. Most of the inmates will be released and back in society. It was a program coordinated by the University of Wisconsin and the Federal BUreau of prisons.

ridgeratWhen I was hiring in the litho shop I worked in, I ran applicants through a 10-minute test after a brief interview.
Of course I could tell one way or the other in less time generally, and I knew when I had a good one.

XinTXI had to spend 30 minutes explaining the concept of cavitation to a new Aerospace engineer.
Was interviewing an Electrical Engineer. Showed him a relatively simple circuit diagram. His response "Well, this is obviously a pressure system diagram."

Those sound like perfect C-level executives for private equity or hedge funds. Sociopath + manipulative describes the typical management brought in when a company is purchased.

Lefty SigThe engineering related hiring issues are nothing new. Manufacturing is not taught in most 4-year ABET accredited engineering programs. That's because most professors do research in things that are not related to manufacturing. Kids may graduate without every using a caliper or micrometer. And most likely never saw a lathe or mill, much less operated one. Willingness to USE THEIR BRAINS TO FIGURE THINGS OUT is what you need to look for.
Then you have an issue with kids from places like India. Labor is cheap there and it is seen as beneath those with education, so the educated never learn to work on anything. Americans with a technical aptitude often learn to do things with their hands.

mikeyspizzaThis goes beyond manufacturing and engineering, to almost every profession. Let's not forget that the government is also hiring these folks left and right, and some end up as policy analysts and advisors to people like Diane Feinstein, McCarthy, etc.
These are the policy wonks and ideologues pushing the electric vehicles, banning light bulbs, and now restricting production of refrigerants for air conditioners.
